Disney heroines with highly successful phim chiếu rạp are usually the ones to become princesses as far as I know, regardless of their actual status within their movies. Eilonwy, for instance, was a princess, but her movie was a flop, so she got left out...

Disney actually has a rather strict perameters that a character must fall into in order to be considered a Disney Princess, and there's a specific "rule" that was made basically just so they can call Mulan a Disney Princess.
