How in the world can someone actually pick sleeping beauty? Sorry, but I think I should've not even made sleeping beauty an option. The reason why I did this is because I wanted to see which people would like better. The movie's animation that is incomparable to any disney movie's animation in my opinion or a dull kind of animation that most people call gorgeous. It's not to be a hater.

^It was a very hard movie to animate, and the animation to this day still gets praised. They were inspired by actual art, and worked hard to make the movements realistic (which they did by using rotoscoping- tracing the live actor's movements). You don't have to like something for it to be good. I can't stand the movie Brave but I completely admit it was well animated with a good score.

I prefer Anastasia's animation but SB's was still one of the best of its time.

And audreyfreak, I agree that SB's phenomenal for it's time even though I think Cinderella was the best for it's time. The point is, I know it was very hard to animate. I get that. Did I say it was so rushed? Did I say it was their fault? I just said Anastasia is a trillion times better than sleeping beauty's animation. I'm sorry but People always misunderstand when I say stuff like this. I might be misunderstanding you, but what I am trying to clear up is I didn't say it was fully their fault and it wasn't hard. I just said that Anastasia had a million times better animation and even for it's time it was absolutely impressive. I don't care what year this movie comes from but it will always be a phenomenally animated movie if that makes sense.

Better, not more likable, am I correct? While I admit the shapes and flow of Anastasia are very appealing, the style isn't very interesting and it isn't very revolutionary. Sleeping Beauty is a moving painting, the time and dedication put into it make the more complex, artful, and over all superior animation. The details, the colour schemes, the textures, everything comes together to make Sleeping Beauty more than animation. Each frame is an entire painting, and Anastasia is not here near as stunning and awe-inspiring as that. Yes, at times it's a bit bland concerning colour and I can understand if someone dislikes the vertical style of the movie, but it's lush, gorgeous, and there's so much to look at in each frame.

There is no competition....Sleeping Beauty has an outstanding animation, it's a truly unique masterpiece. Anastasia has the usual fluid DB Animation, but otherwise, there is nothing special about it. And the character designs are very similar to what he did in every single movie of him, which makes the whole thing very boring.

I like both and it is very hard to choose between these two.
I choose Anastasia, for the absolutely insane frame use of Don Bluth XD
And because i kind of am biased towards the use of rotoscoping..which is funny, because i love old soviet animation.
But yeah, normally i wouldn´t choose between them, i don´t like to compare the "quality" of animation, when a Disney movie is a choice to make.

I agree completely with Swanpride!!! Sleeping Beauty has extremely masterful animaton.

The animation is the best and most gorgeous of all time. Everything is in stunning detail and every frame is a masterpiece. Even despite the angular style, everything is so fluid (just watch Aurora's skirt in the forest scene.) Other than color inconsistencies, there are no objective flaws in it. It was incredibly revolutionary and has still never been duplicated. It is the most unique animation style by far.
Anastasia has nice animation, but it's just like Disney house animation, I can honestly think of a dozen just like it with the exception of color scheme (which will vary from movie to movie.)

Anastasia is not disney house animation! besides, they completely made it look real and added a trillion times more detail than sleeping beauty! Pay attention to the ballroom scene! Pay attention to the detail in the portrait, the royal elements of the ballroom! The jewels, the frames and portrait, the music box! The royal palace and everything else look literally royal! They completely set the magic in the animation drawing it jewel by jewel portrait by portrait. They couldn't make it look any more real. If you look at real pictures of the Tsarkoe Selo (the Russian palace) and compare it to the one in the movie it practically looks identical. Did you see her crown? How the heck did they make it look so real? Or what about the portrait? So much texture, the color contrast was perfect in that movie. they truly set the magical world. The jewels, the glitter, the royalty, everything was perfect. Sleeping beauty only have us the ugliest palace I have ever seen. Seriously, the palace was so dark and grey. What's with the color in that movie? In Anastasia they gave us a variety of colors to represent royalty and so much texture and shine in their designs but the problem I have with sleeping beauty is the ugly colors. Seriously, they are so inconsistent. People complain about belle! Please, at least belle has the same colored eyes. Aurora's eyes change, her hair changes, everything changes. Belle just keeps getting drawn in different styles. Aurora changes style and color. Also about the animation inconsistencies, one minute, aurora's hair is bleach blonde and next second it's oily brown. One minute her crown looks like a dress up crown and next second it's this detailed and bedazzled crown meant for a princess. The animation style keeps changing. One minute in the woods it's very natural, subtle, and lush and next second it's deep and extremely detailed in the spell scene and looks CGI. They really have to make more smooth transitions. She touches the spindle and all of the sudden she looks different. That was random.

Not to mention about the colors, they didn't even give us the sunshine gold they promised us. I thought aurora was the girl with the long locks of sunshine gold? Sorry, all they gave us was pale greyish blonde and purple lips. I understand if they didn't have the color of sunshine gold, but they didn't have to tell us that her hair was sunshine gold. And what about the lips as red as the rose? Maleficent's lips were red, why couldn't they use some of the red for aurora? Why is everything in the movie so dark and grey? Why is everything in a dark and creepy shade? Why is everything so dull and so inconsistent?

that is basically why I think Anastasia has better animation. Sleeping beauty may be very detailed and lush, but the colors just ruin it, The background people look horribly animated, and the colors are very inconsistent. I also think the palace looks horrible and the way it's animated overall is dull. Anastasia wakes you up with beautiful colors and masterpiece detail in every necklace on every attender of the ball.

I actually like the more muted colours of Sleeping Beauty...it's part of the charm of the movie. But in the end, colours are just a matter of taste. Sleeping Beauty was an incredible challenging project, and every single panel is an impressive piece of work. It's more than just people moving in front of a background, every scene is arranged like a portrait, meaning that even the position of the people in the picture are part of a perfect arrangement. It's incredible easy to find a screenshot on Sleeping Beauty you can use as a screensaver, and incredible easy to find good looking shots for icon making. (Just see the icons I just did of Phillip for the colour set in the 20/20 challenge).
Finding similar perfectly arranged screenshots in Anastasia is on the other hand, very difficult...there are only a few scenes which qualify. And as I said, fluid animation (some odd choices though...never got the point of the dancing worms), but nothing special, especially since this was done with a computer and more modern equipment, while Sleeping Beauty is HANDDRAWN and HANDINKED! Inconsistences (though most of them are simply a case of different lightning) are excusable in this case, especially since I don't think that they are noticeable unless you are actively looking for them (actually, I have no idea what people are talking about, I don't see it).

The point is, people are thinking this is about which animation is more impressive. I am asking which animation looks nicer, hand drawn or computer animated. People are thinking you have to give sleeping beauty an exception just because it was extremely difficult to animate. Just forget how hard it was to animate, my question is which one looks nicer despite the diffculty.

And about the inconsistencies, how the way aurora's face completely changes isn't at all because of the lighting. I don't think a detailed crown is going to all of the sudden become to look like a dress up crown because of the lighting.

shanyuisboss- And, in my opinion, that would be Sleeping Beauty. And you put "better" in the question, so don't blame us for looking at it objectively. As well as the fact you keep saying that Anastasia is definitively "better" animation, not animation you prefer.
First off, Anastasia is not more detailed than Sleeping Beauty. That stuff you mentioned could really be found in most Disney movies- where are the wood lines in EVERY wooden item in the movie, even in the far background? Where are the DOZENS of varieties of plant life, all drawn in exact detail? People who deny that Sleeping Beauty is detailed are just being biased. Everything beside the realism is a part of Sleeping Beauty's animation- and it wasn't meant to be realistic. That was the point, it was meant to look flat and 2 dimensional. And the castle in Sleeping Beauty is way prettier than the castle in The Little Mermaid.
Next, I honestly don't see any style inconsistencies in Sleeping Beauty- it's only color inconsistencies. And again, like Swanpride said, they were entirely hand-inked cells, so that's not really unexpected. Also, you can't say colors make one style of animation "better" than the other. And again, you did not say I Prefer, you said Anastasia Has Better Animation. Color is entirely subjective. You can prefer Anastasia's animation, and we can prefer Sleeping Beauty's animation. Which I honestly think is the best and most beautiful ever.
And Hunchback has the same style with the exception of the colors.

shanyu I dont want to sound rude at all but i think your being biased here... you obviously love anastasia and everything about her movie which is fine but, here your saying the animation is prettier looking when your quesiton was which is BETTER.
i too like anastasia's more but SB was really really ahead of its time i think, drawn by hand but super detailed!
i agree with whoever said thecharacters dont look original in anastasia xD that bothered me as a kid. dmitri, the Titan Ae guy and cornelius all have the same face and hairstyles!

^I'm not being biased, Why does everyone think that I'm being biased? Sleeping beauty has tons of detail and all that but what bothers me is the color. I don't think grey animation is good in any way. I did not ask which one is more revolutionary or unique, I said better.

And it depends which you think is better. I seriously don't know how to explain why I think Anastasia has better animation. Their is this touch to it that just makes it so much more different and cooler then sleeping beauty's.

Not to mention, they are horrible at drawing people. Their is not a single person in that movie that I would call nice looking. They may have gotten a very detailed background design drawn only by hand, but Anastasia made flawless character drawings and a royal background and the colors were magnificent. Every moment of Anastasia is like another royal moment in the Tsarkoe Selo.

I seriously hate when people call me biased over this because it's annoying. I have seriously always thought that Anastasia has the best animation ever and favorite animation ever so I am not being biased.

If you keep gushing over the details in Anastasia (which are, frankly, not that impressive), don't complain if people point out that there are way more details in the backgrounds of Sleeping beauty.
Weather you think that the people in "Sleeping Beauty" are nice looking or not (though there is a reason why Aurora is considered the most beautiful of all the princesses), the way they are drawn, especially the lines in Aurora's design is something special. You could plug out the characters of Anastasia and place them in a couple of other movies, it wouldn't be noticeable, because the style is so similar.
And at the end of the day, a movie which took 9 years to make, mainly because of the detailed animation, can't be matched easily. Honestly, I don't know any animated movie which can.

Can you stop saying that I complain over the detailed thing in sleeping beauty when people make that point because I never did that, why are you guys assuming that I am saying sleeping beauty is not detailed when I never said that?

I just don't want to keep arguing with you guys, everyone keeps thinking that I think sleeping beauty does not have detailed animation and thinking I'm being biased. I don't want to deal with this.Let's just end this debate.
