Ummm... I'm a little mixed on it because I do agree there are some overrated things out there (like Frozen) but it's also pretty subjective.

I think overrated and underrated should go the way of the dodo. Like the more people shut up about it the better. Especially the ones that whine that a character in any fandom is such.

You are right about it being really subjective and some people use it too much, but there are things that really deserves to be called "overrated'', such as when they get too much praise and attention when they really are nothing special

Not asking this because of any one person. I've just been seeing 'overrated' dropped all over the place left and right and I feel like people just don't know what it really means; I've seen so many people call something overrated just because they don't like it. And I'll give examples in the following paragraphs (taken from another poll where I discussed the matter).

overrated is just so subjective. If a group of people likes a certain character then the character is good...at least in their eyes. Personally I think Bella is rated just right; she has a handful of fans as all the other characters do and actually kind of a larger hate-base. She isn't neglected in terms of attention nor is she constantly talked about. And when she is talked about, it's usually the same few people. And that's not overrated. Of course her handful of fans are going to talk about her and love her. And she really is an neat character.

This comment addresses overrated in the sense of how much attention a character gets; the less attention, the less overrated. But it should be noted that overrated implies that the attention is undeserved and this is where I start to take issue with it. Because who is setting that bar as to how much attention something deserve or doesn't deserve. That matter varies from person to person, preservative to preservative.

Okay yeah but overrated and underrated doesn't have as much to do with liking or disliking as it does the amount of attention the character receives right. Right? You can like a character that's overrated and one that's underrated. And vice versa. Taking it in that route; Of course fans like her, that's what fans are. And when you really think about it, she's got a hand full of them (at least on fanpop) we're simply really vocal. There are less polls about her than (say) Hermione and Snape. I counted 2 specifically about her in the 7 pages I clicked through when looking for the links below. However she still gets attention so she isn't underrated either.

like the above the prior italics this gets at the blurred line between dislike and overrated as well as the received attention. Factoring in how vocal a small group can be. Something can have a tiny fanbase that makes it seem like it's more loved than it really is if that makes sense. And again, who gets to dictate if that attention is deserved?

Even further overrated means that the character doesn't deserve the love he/she gets. Tbh I think Bella deserves that hand full she has. She's a very interesting character. She's really funny and pretty badass to keep it simple.
Of course whether he/she deserves the fans or not is also subjective.

Like =/= underrated, dislike =/= overrated. Overrated deals in how much love and attention something gets. And whether or not that this is as good as people make it out to be. And that's (again) where I take issue with the term overrated itself; because (once again) it's just so
subjective of a term.

I've seen so many characters I love get called overrated (Icy and Morgause among them). Which leads me to; I don't think people really know what overrated is; on the Icy poll there were at least 4 or 5 people who picked overrated and commented something like 'I don't like her, she's annoying.' People automatically click 'yes, it's overrated' when they don't like the thing in question. Which is another thing I have against overrated itself. There is just such a negative connotation with overrated and I don't necessarily think it has to be as bad as people make it out to be. Overrated =/= bad/shitty/lame/boring.

@uploaded I can agree with that. I think there are always exceptions.

Honestly I think I'm just gonna make an article of this.

The term "better" is usually just as subjective, and I certainly believe it is a necessary word to be able to use.

That's a good point. But I do think that 'better' is less subjective than 'overrated', but that's just my personal opinion. Do with it what you will.

That said, it should be pointed out that I'm not telling people "OMG don't use 'overrated' it's bad!!!1!!" I just don't care for it myself.

PeacefulCritic picked I agree with it:
I don't really care for the term to be honest.I do use it a lot when talking about something that gets a good amount of attention. Like for example: Many people say SAO is overrated because it lacks good main characters and have plot holes in them. Same is said for Frozen. To clear it up overrated means:"Something that has a higher opinion of (someone or something) than is deserved." So the term is used correctly most of the time. I personally don't mind the word. It's overused and there are moments when it's used incorrectly, but it's very rare that it's used badly. Because there isn't anything especially wrong with the word overrated and it's a hard word misuse by accident. When someone say Frozen is overrated they are going to make a reason to why it doesn't deserve the attention it gets.Which is where the term is mostly used. Now if I disagree with that and say I think it's perfectly rated; I mean I agree with how something is rated. So in a way I do disagree when you said that dislike and overrated aren't connected.Because the two words are very connected when talking about something that doesn't deserve the love it gets.I do in fact agree that it's used subjectively, but when it's used that way people are explaining why something is overrated. However the word itself isn't that subjective when you say it for something you like.I actually couldn't say SAO is overrated without sounding like I have some dislike for and I can't say something is underrated without sounding like I like something about it.Like for example I said a awhile back , that I think Frozen is underrated and gave the reasons on why I like it.I also said I thought it got too much hate, even though I know there's just as much people who like it.(Now I'm aware that all that I'm saying now is kinda of against what I said in the past, so I'll explain a bit on why)I'm not saying you can't like something and still call it overrated. Because over means too much and rated meaning the placement so, it's very possible to like something and call it overrated.I said in the past that most things I'm very fond of are overrated; Because I do think it gets too much attention even though I agree it's a great, I just don't think it should get that much positive attention.(I honestly don't think anything should be that hypes) t's just not used wrongly when saying I find this overrated and explaining why you disagree and think people put it too high of a placement.

If I could ban one word from Fanpop, it is the word 'overrated'.
Holy horses it is cringe-worthy to see that word being misused everywhere here.
Perhaps as cringe-worthy as me saying holy horses.
Where the fuck did that come from?
Apologies.
