Elena does comfort Damon, but it isn't because Rose died. If u notice, Elena has a the same áo sơ mi she wore in the promo when she's asking Stefan whether Rose will be alright. She also appears to have the same shoulder bag which can also be visible in the hug picture right below Damon's right elbow.
