^^ I agree. Snape was a great character, but he wasn't the best teacher. He was too biased towards his own house. And Hagrid was a horrible teacher. Like Mermaid-Tail said, he put people off the subject. A good teacher should get his/her students interested in the subject he/she teaches.

I think that Snape is a perfect teacher for those who like the subject and want to 'devote' themselves truly. He is not however the best teacher for the rest of students. There would Lupin win, yet I doubt that Lupin is at least half as knowledgeable as Severus is.

Mcgonagall not the best character but def best teacher. Snape was too harsh on students and Lupin was good and even though he's nice and everything he was a werewolf.

Mermaid-Tail picked Remus Lupin:
I actually did remember Dumbledore, but I just didn't think he was the best. Yes he gave Harry those lessons, but if in those lessons he'd been more upfront with Harry and given him the info he really needed straight up imagine the trouble he'd have saved him. Also, I always felt like he cared more about his loyal circle of friends than the students as a whole, because of things like him letting Hagrid keep his job despite him putting all the students off the subject. That shows him putting his friends above the wellfare and education of the students, which to me doesn't make him great at his job. Maybe if we'd seen him teach a regular class and he'd been good it would be different, but in the books when I look at him not as Harry's mentor but as an educator I actaully don't think he did the best job. Great character, but I didn't consider him the best teacher.

^^ Yeah, I agree. Although I wouldn't be so harsh on him. I wouldn't say he care more about his friends than his students. I think he let Hagrid continue teaching because on the whole, Care of Magical Creatures isn't a really important subject. I'd say he had more important things on his mind than whether or not students were interested in a more or less useless subject. While it may not have been the right thing to do as Headmaster, I don't fault him for it quite that much.

Though Flitwick and Sprout are also great teachers with a good grasp of their subject and a good attitude towards their students, though Flitwick seems to have a problem with keeping his classes orderly and keeping his students fucussed.

Remus only talked about dark creatures: not about hexes or curses. It might just be the third year curriculum, but I find it hard to imagine the entire third year is solely about dark creatures.

Snape is I think a good teacher in that he is good at keeping order and knows his subject, but he shows to much favourism towards his own house.

Hagrid is a nice person and knows, and loves, his subject, but he is bad in determining what is dangerous and what isn't for his students. He is a big, strong guy and can handle most creatures, his students however can not.

I find it really hard to determine how good of a teacher Trelawney is: like Hermione and Minerve I don't think Divination is a real subject. But it excist in the Harry Potter world and Lavender and Parvati think she is a great teacher, so I guess she must have her qualties. Her lessons do seem to have a nice structure, but lots of students don't take her subject serious. Also the fact that Harry and Ron constantly fake their predictions and she falls for it every time, tells me she is not that good a teacher.

Horace Slughorn is also a great teacher, that knows and likes his subject and his classes seem fairly orderly. But he seems to be to busy with the potential fame of his students, I don't think that's a good quality in a teacher, especially since his Slug Club seems to divide students.

(Damn, that was long. I must be really bored.)

Snape is a horrid teacher. I'm sorry but it's true. He knows the subject fantastically, but a teacher who uses favouritism to get by and puts down students who have low self-esteem to begin with, is not a good teacher in my eyes.
