Thinking every Asian is smart like Einstein or every black person is really good at sports is just as harmful as believing "negative stereotypes"

There was an episode of "What would you do" that brought this exact subject to life.

^ What Blind said.

Like the stereotype that higher-functioning Autistic's are better at certain things like science/math and stuff like that. Sure, it may be intended to be a complement, but that makes it harder on the Autistic's who don't always excel at those things. It's just another expectation that they may be pressured to live up to, and that's not fair.

@Blind Lmao that's actually exactly what inspired this poll.

Like even as an ace I've gotten stuff like this. Like I've been told that because I'm ace I must be more morally sound. And it's like ??? kay thanks for the extra pressure, I guess?

I feel like people might mean well by positive stereotypes but it hurts the people who don't fit the bill and puts pressure on those who may be able to.

Or this other stereotype that higher-functioning Autistics can "fit in" to society a lot better because of how mild Autism is compared to others. Like, I use to get told this a lot by my family.

"You're a higher-functioning Autistic, so IDK why you don't make an effort to act normal like everyone else. Why do you still act so weird? I don't get it."

Not the exact wording, but you get the point.

As an Asperger's person who got A's and B's in school, it definitely is weird that people assume that all Aspies are like Sheldon Cooper. Yes, academics have always been a strength of mine. Yes, I love knowledge. But in many ways, I'm more normal and average. I did well in my science and math classes, and I enjoyed them, but my strengths and passion lie within language, literature, and writing. I've gotten C's and D's on tests before in my life. I've gone into tests thinking I didn't need to study and got my butt kicked. Not all Aspies are the same.

Exactly what @blind said.

High expectations can be damaging. Shitty example, but I despised English class by the time I finished high school bc I'd done well in it before and expected me to do well in it again. It was terrible. Went from my favourite to least favourite subject in the space of two years. Pretty sure I'm too traumatised to do any piece of creative writing ever again lol

@Renarimae & Shadow Thank you for your comments. I actually hadn't realized that these were stereotypes autistic & asperger's people face. It's nice to get some insight.

Its fine, a lot of people don't realize the unnecessary pressure we sometimes face. But, yeah, I honestly get that a lot, and it sucked.
