the Facebook Disney fandom is........ terrible, bluntly, and people are more interested in saying whatever dumb thing they can for Likes than saying anything honest or sensible. Youtube is only a bit better but it really depends on where you look. I've seen people be like "haha fanpop is for kids", and while Tumblr is great about diversity and appreciation for less popular characters/movies but it's also incredibly bad about mob mentalities, bullying, and oh my gosh I'm tired of my less loved characters getting the few defense posts they have without fans of more popular DPs hijacking it to make them about their own faves.
also, yeah, it's true fanpop is more geared toward the younger crowd and has had childish fights here, but tumblr is incredibly immature even with its adult users, and it has almost never made me change my opinion the DPs like fanpop has. Like, I used to really dislike Belle and Ariel, but now for Belle i'm more towards ok with and Ariel I'm neutral toward, and it helped make Aurora my fave. it's generally far more positive and supportive and better at calling out bullies (while never having a toxic cancel culture as tumblr has).
Even after that hiatus I had from this site for a few years I had to deal with the exact same issues; had one well-known user get on my case for adding Moana and Frozen to a countdown, I had a couple users get mad at me for liking Elsa and "shoving her in everyone's faces", and another user got mad at me for saying that Rapunzel was in an abusive home and wasn't better off compared to Cinderella or Snow White
I have fun on this site and I love doing countdowns and my Best Lyric/Quote games, but it's really sad that nothing has changed in the almost 10 years I've been here.
I loved reading your comment. I agree with everything you said. I think it is funny how you said we are a secret community. I think it is true considering how many Disney princess fans exist compared to how many active users are on this site.
Also, I agree about Frozen. I like to include Anna and Elsa and I did include them in my ranking the Disney princesses article. Anna is my 2nd favorite princess, and I think she should be included even if she isn't in the official lineup since she is royalty. <3
I didn't know about the Facebook group, either.
I also love that the classics are appreciated on this site. I have actually moved some of them up in my list since I have been on here. I don't think every princess needs to be "strong and independent" like the media portrays, but I do feel every princess is strong and independent in their own ways.
Snow White moved from my least favorite Disney princess (mostly due to not liking her movie as much as others) to in my top 5, so seeing the good qualities of a character being praised rather than put down is a great part of Fanpop. :)
BUT whenever intelligent well mannered and well adjusted users come together there is some magic, I just wish that happened way more often.
I am not active in the Disney fandom on other areas of the internet, so I can't really compare, but I had a short stint on Tumblr a few years back but it wasn't for me. I'm sorry that others have experienced bullying or harassment on here as well as other sites. That is awful and I sincerely hope you never have to experience that again.
Although I personally tend to keep my postings to the "official" DPs, I actually really like it when people include Frozen or other unofficial princess on here because it adds some variety. It really bothers me when people try to gate keep what others can and cannot post.
Like BB2010 and disnerdtobe said, this site is a lot of fun and I can and do browse it for hours sometimes. I love seeing people's creativity. And like AudreyFreak sunnyfields said I appreciate that this club has succeeded in changing some of my opinions on the princesses, like Cinderella shooting from the bottom to the top of my list!
And yeah, the appreciation for the Classics is really wonderful on here. They deserve all the praise!
I don't use tumblr, and I limit my my facebook usage. I was grateful when IMDB took down their message boards. It was full of hateful users who only loved Frozen and nothing else.
There are a handful of good users on Fanpop. I support those folks.
So, yup. This is how I feel about Fanpop in general.
I also suspect while fanpop was kind of aimed at younger people originally, most of us are actually older than that. The people who end up here are those who aren't happy at Facebook or twitter or tumbler and are looking for a place where mature discussions are still possible.
To be fair, this is the only place I'm active in Disney stuff. I follow a lot of Disney fans on Tumblr, but I run an old school Dreamworks blog, so I don't get too involved. I actually prefer the ethos and sense of humor over there; the big problem for me is how easily you can lose control over a Tumblr post. There's no such thing as shares/reblogs on Fanpop, so it's easier to talk about some things without the discussion spiraling because some stranger is thirsty for reblogs. And the pace makes it hard to get analytical - people are like "what is this, school? I'm not here to read." I like that Fanpop encourages longer posts.
I think anywhere can be a "good" fandom space, you just have to know where to go to find what you want: self-contained discussions on Fanpop, images/quick stuff on Tumblr or Discord, shitposting on Facebook, etc.
Except for Youtube, that site is ebola.
