Edward’s POV

Kayla was hysterical. Tears were streaming down her face and she was close to screaming. Her mind was in a state of panic and her thoughts made no sense at all. Her hands were covered in Charlie’s blood as she was trying to stop the bleeding. I was finding it difficult to be so close to Charlie with all the blood. I wasn’t even breathing. Emmett and Jasper were as far away as possible without leaving us. Jasper was having thêm difficulty that Emmett but he was trying to calm Kayla down but it seemed her emotion was too strong.
“Why isn’t this working?” Kayla pressed down harder on Charlie’s wound. “Pressure is good for bleeding. It’s supposed to stop it! Stop!”
She was screaming at the blood now.
“Kayla, love,” I said, gently. “There’s nothing we can do. It’s too late.”
Charlie’s tim, trái tim was beating very slowly now and his breathing was so very shallow.
“If only I could heal him,” she cried, wiping her eyes on her arms. “I could save him!”
“Kayla, don’t blame yourself, this is not your fault.” I was trying to soothe her, comfort her, before she completely broke down.

I looked down at Charlie who was so pale he could pass for a vampire. I could bite him and save him but I might not be able to just bite him. I could kill him faster than the dagger was. But if I did manage not to kill him and he changed would he like what he had become? Before, when Kayla had asked me to bite him, he shouted no. He didn’t want to become a vampire. If he didn’t want to become a vampire I wasn’t going to go against it. I couldn’t. If that was his dying wish I wasn’t going to change him. I only wished that I could save him. I didn’t think to bring medical equipment with me. I didn’t think anyone would get this badly hurt. Charlie had promised no casualties.
“No, Edward, please,” she pleaded with me. She put her hands together like in prayer. “I’m begging you, I can’t lose him. I can’t.”
“Kayla, he doesn’t want to be a vampire.” I tried to be kind. “I’m not going to bite him if he doesn’t want me to.”
Fresh tears flowed down her cheeks at my answer. I would have sunk my teeth into Charlie’s neck if it stopped her tears and pain but I couldn’t do it. I wouldn’t disrespect Charlie like that.
“But bạn didn’t want to be a vampire and Carlisle changed you.”
“I didn’t know ma cà rồng existed,” I said. “And I was dying so I didn’t know until it was too late.”
“Charlie’s dying and he won’t know until it’s too late.”
I sighed. This was going to kill her but I just couldn’t change him. If I did and Charlie woke up after the transformation what was going to happen when he realised what he was and was repulsed bởi it? The thirst would drive him insane because he wouldn’t want to feed on anything and he would probably try to kill himself even though it is physically impossible. And what if he hurt Kayla? “Kayla, I can’t. It’s not what he wants.”
She screamed in anger and pressed even harder on his wound.
“I can heal him!” she shouted. “I must have his ability I’m his daughter!”
She pressed her hands harder onto Charlie’s wound and I wanted to grab her hands and hold her but she looked at me with such fierceness in her eyes I knew she would fight me if I tried.
I could see the concentration in her mind. Healing Charlie was all she thought about and what she was focusing on. I thought nothing would happen. Nothing could happen, she didn’t have Charlie’s healing ability hoặc Charlie would be up and shouting, as usual. But then a silver blue light shone out from Kayla’s hands. Kayla looked at her hands, totally stunned. She looked up at me as if I knew what was going on. I shrugged and watched her hands. She lifted her hands slightly and I could see under them to Charlie’s wound. Except it wasn’t exactly a wound anymore. It was healing. The skin was fusing back together until there was no wound. Charlie took in a deep breath and I heard his tim, trái tim rate increase.
She’d healed him.

Kayla’s POV

I could feel Charlie healing underneath my hands. I wasn’t really touching him but I could feel all the tissue repairing and the blood replenishing faster than normal. His skin healed under me and I almost laughed with happiness. Charlie breathed in deeply and his tim, trái tim rate increased to a normal rhythm. The silver blue light faded and Charlie was healed. There was no hole in his chest at all. It was like he’d never been stabbed. I touched the skin that moments cách đây had revealed Charlie’s insides. It felt normal, like normal skin should. I had healed him. It wasn’t an illusion.
“You’ve healed him,” Edward said. He too touched Charlie’s skin. “It’s like he wasn’t stabbed.”
“I know,” I said. “I can’t believe I did it.”
I stared down at Charlie and was so relieved he was alive. I thought he was going to die. I had imagined life without him and all I could see what a great big empty hole. Just like when I imagined life without Edward.
“I thought I was going to lose him, Edward.” I touched Charlie’s cheek lightly. I noticed my blood stained hands then. Better wash my hands before I touch Edward.
“I thought he wasn’t going to make it,” Edward replied. “I told him there was nothing I could do for him. I didn’t have any equipment hoặc anything. If I did I could have.”
“I know,” I said. I could see that Edward was feeling upset that he wouldn’t have been able to save Charlie. “I wouldn’t have blamed bạn if Charlie had died.”
Edward nodded. I reached over and touched my lips to his.
“Do not beat yourself up over this,” I said, my lips still against his. “If bạn do, I will beat bạn up.”
He smiled and kissed me.
“I’ve missed bạn so much,” he whispered. “I don’t know how I survived without you.”
“Neither do I.”
Charlie groaned quietly and we separated. Charlie’s eyelids fluttered as he struggled to open them.

Charlie opened his eyes and blinked several times before his eyes focused on me.
“Hey,” I said. “How are bạn feeling?”
“Better than before,” he said, looking confused. “What happened?”
He looked from me to Edward and back again.
“I healed you,” I said. I wiggled my blood stained fingers.
“You did?” Charlie looked surprised.
“I’m just as surprised as bạn are,” I smiled.
Charlie rubbed his eyes with one hand as if he was tired. He sat up slowly as if he was unsure of himself. I think he expected to see the wound still in his chest. He looked down and sighed with relief when he saw only healed skin.
“You know, when I pictured our reunion I wasn’t bleeding to death,” he said, smiling. “Where’s Loren?”
That was when I remembered. I turned around and there was his body. His eyes still staring with a hole between them. Charlie followed my gaze and his eyes widened when he saw Loren dead.
“Did bạn do that?” he asked me.
I nodded.
“I looked at bạn and I saw a dagger in his hand and I fired without thinking. I didn’t mean to do it.”
I was still staring into Loren’s unseeing eyes. I couldn’t look away. I could see the accusation in his eyes. bạn KILLED ME! I AM DEAD BECAUSE OF YOU!
“Don’t think like that,” Charlie folded me in his arms. “It was self defence. He was going to kill you. bạn did the right thing.”
I closed my eyes and laid my head on Charlie’s shoulder. He continued to tell me that I shouldn’t blame myself, I had done nothing wrong. A sudden and overwhelming exhaustion came over me and I fell asleep to the gentle rocking and soothing voice of my dad.
