Garren woke up to the faint smell of thực phẩm and yelling coming from downstairs. The sound of a door slamming rang through the house, and Garren slowly sat up, just in case his joints and wounds still ached. As he got to his feet, he checked how his body was doing. Surprised, nothing hurt, not even his cut.

Climbing downstairs, he found Kayleen sitting at a bàn near what looked like a kitchen, fuming mad. Once she noticed Garren, however, she put on a small smile.

"Afternoon, sleepy-head," she greeted. "You know, bạn snore REALLY loudly. Thought I'd never sleep."

"Sorry." Garren replied. "Nothing I can do about it though. Where's your sister? I heard arguing."

Kayleen blushed. "Sorry bạn had to hear that. Told her I needed to take bạn somewhere. She demanded to know where the hell bạn came from. That sort of thing."

"Well, even I don't know where I came from. What'd bạn tell her?" "That I had no clue. She didn't want a bum living here. Stormed out. Whatever."

"Sorry." Kayleen shrugged. "Things have never been the same between us after her parents died." Garren looked confused. "HER parents?" "Yeah, they took me in as a child. Never knew who my real parents were."

Garren looked overwhelmed. Why was she telling him all this so easily? Kayleen seemed to read his thoughts. "I feel like I can speak as if I've known bạn forever. Weird, huh?" Garren gave a slight nod. His stomach grumbled. "Got anything to eat?"

Kayleen almost rolled her eyes. "Didn't get the hint yesterday? We don't have the food." "Then what's that smell?" "Last night's feast."

Kayleen picked up a nearby piece of bánh mỳ, bánh mì and threw him it. "Eat that on the way."

Garren caught the bánh mỳ, bánh mì with ease. "Where are we going?"
"The forest again. There's a test bạn need to pass." She tossed him a sword in a sheath that she took from a case hidden under some hay. A plaque near the case read In memory of Aiden, our Công chúa tóc xù and foolish brother. A hero.

Garren caught the sword in his other hand. Without thinking, he tied the sword in it's sheath around his waist as if he had done it all his life. It felt balanced with him. "If I fail?"

Kayleen looked at him with something that showed...pity?
"Then I'll have to send back your dead body to your world. I'll explain everything on the way. Let's go."

VERONICA
Carter’s Perspective

As I’m walking with the pack, I instantly realize there is a clear leader. Veronica. She was thêm than your average coyote. She actually had reddish-brown lông, lông thú instead of the generic gray-brown. She still had the piercing yellow eyes that coyotes are known for, but hers made bạn feel like she was staring straight into your soul… She made it clear she was the leader, too. She in fact came straight up to me and told me, “Hey! Newbie. I’m the leader of this pack, okay? Ain’t ever gonna become some fancy-shmancy leader.”
It was pretty clear if bạn ask me....

Gerald wrinkled his nose at the earthy, mossy smell that always filled the woods. He longed to get back to his palace, but there was work to be done, and a king must do his work, after all.

Gerald leaned back against the soft, silky back of the ghế, chỗ ngồi and watched the trees blur by.
How grateful he was that he didn’t live out here, with all the faerie and elves and goblins. No, goblins lived in the marshes, didn’t they? But the faerie-folk, elves…still out here. He could feel them watching...

June 6, 1994, my birth. My mother never meant to have me. Never did. My father's condom apparently broke so they were stuck with me. A babygirl. I had short brown hair with amber eyes. But when I was born, I had blue with a light brown lining around my pupil. The doctors never could figure that part out. My eyes changed quicker than most babies. My eyes changed a week earlier than they were supposed to. That's why I get picked on, I tell that story and no one believes me. They call me "Weirdo", "fake", etc.
Though my mother left and my father is a total drunk,...

Chapter 7: bạn Can't Trust Anyone These Days

James Knight slumped in his chair. It seemed like the most appropriate thing to do in this situation. How else was he suppose to act? He was a train wreck waiting to happen. He didn't bother combing his dirty blonde hair hoặc wear decent clothes. He still had on his Lakers áo len thun, áo len, sweatshirt and faded blue jeans with holes ripped in the front. This was the kind of outfit he wouldn't dare where around the house if this was a regular day. For shoes, he had his scuffed, black Reeboks. His eyes were red and puffy but he still radiated that devilish charm...

This an except from the bài viết How to Get Out of Your Own Way When Writing. This is Lời khuyên from an accomplished tác giả named Elizabeth Knox

"I prefer reading, and writing, in the third person – “he walked along the shore,” rather than the first person, “I walked along the shore.” Many novice writers start nghề viết văn in the first person. There are some very good reasons for that. For a start, we’re all used to telling stories with ourselves at their centers. Also, using a first-person voice can be a kind of playacting. They narrator is a “not-you” you’re pretending to be.
