Director Taika Waititi says Thor: Ragnarok will be \'a crazy movie\'
Taika Waititi, the director behind comedies like
Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Eagle vs Shark, did a Reddit AMA for the first time yesterday. Although a large portion of it focused on his upcoming project, Thor: Ragnarok, Waititi also shared his thoughts on the Marvel universe (he ignored it), breaking into the film industry (be an assistant first), and the best way to approach a celebrity in public (just do it).
Waititi says Ragnarok will have an \'80s vibe and a "Taika-esque tone" to it. It probably won\'t be similar to much else in the Marvel universe, given that Waititi also admitted he decided to basically pretend that universe didn\'t exist. "I made an effort to ignore the fact that there are other
films," he wrote. "I’m trying to ignore the rest of the universe and just make my own awesome movie." He also said he hasn\'t seen
A lack of context might be a good thing if you think Marvel needs a bit of a refresh. "I think
will be one of the most adventurous and most \'out there\' of all the Marvel movies," Waititi wrote. "It\'s a crazy movie."
In classic Waititi style, the AMA was generally lighthearted and irreverent. Waititi, a New Zealander, said that producer Kevin Feige smells like Starbucks, and then added, "But that\'s all Americans actually." After one fan mentioned he / she had seen Waititi in a mall, but was afraid to approach him, Waititi wrote, "You should have come up for a chat. I was bored that day." When asked if he needed anything from the grocery store, Waititi responded, "My childhood back."
But Waititi wasn\'t just around to crack jokes. When a young filmmaker asked him what to do when he got picked on for being Polynesian, Waititi wrote, "Ignore it. They\'re idiots. Our ancestors explored the ENTIRE of the pacific ocean without GPS. You come from that greatness."
