How many times did JRR Tolken have to rewright the Lord of the Rings before it was published?

Just read the history of the war of the rings. They're called Return of the Shadow, The Treason of Isengard, The War of the Ring, and Sauron Defeated. They have the original outlines of the plot and a few things may surprise you, like Treebeard was originally evil and a rejected epilogue. Hope I helped!
