Tygers_Eye Wouldn't be a Disney Princess if they didn't give her a beauty pageant makeover to sell merchandise, and thus sell girls the same sparkly cookie-cutter princess archetype they see with EVERY OTHER DISNEY PRINCESS, thus sell the subliminal message that all females have to fit a fixed standard of conventional beauty to be worth any sort of recognition.

AudreyFreak ^but only some of the DPs look alike so I don't agree there. appealing to little girls with sparkles isn't a "fixed standard of conventional beauty". even in Merida's frankly prettier redesign (the one bored parents pitched a tantrum about), she still looks the most unique. Disney makes them "cookie cutter" as you say because 1) that's what GIRLS like, not what Disney likes, and 2) because they know most parents will be ok with buying it. it's all about money, nothing else really. besides, there's something a little offensive to me about implying looking pretty and sparkly is somehow wrong.

Disney presents almost nothing but examples of the exact same type of pretty and sparkly heroine in all advertising, merchandising, shows, parades and theme park appearances. The few who break the mold get left out or remolded to fit the cut. There's nothing wrong with looking pretty and sparkly... EXCEPT when EVERY Disney princess and heroine gets presented like such, and then either gets left out of merchandise and the public conscience for failing to live up to it, or gets changed to fit the mold even when it contradicts her character. Especially when her character was specifically created to appeal and speak to girls who aren't into the standard pretty sparkly princess, like Mulan and Merida. " How do you know when Disney ONLY pushes the same pretty sparkly merchandise on all girls instead of offering alternatives. How do you know it's what girls actually like and not what society and their parents subliminally pressure and encourage them to like since they have no other examples or options to choose from? Disney doesn't even give tomboy girls a chance to show their appreciation for less girly princesses like Mulan or Merida. They just preemptively decide girls must only like pretty sparkly makeupy dress-toting princesses because that's all that's available of their favorite heroine merchandise. Even though Mulan didn't feel comfortable being dressed up as "a perfect porcelain doll" and found who she was by learning to fight to protect those she loved, "perfect porcelain doll" matchmaker dress Mulan were the ONLY types of Mulan toys offered for girls. I remember. I was there. And I was hurt and offended that society at large assumed all girls only liked Mulan for her pretty dress. And now it's the same with Merida.

manu962 She looks ok to me. Not sexualised and I don't see the sparkles. Better than the previous one.

Digoenes Man, they can never get her face quite right. It's either too glamorous or too vacant looking. None of the redesigns really change anything significant, just a few less sparkles and some minor tweaks. Why can't we have the models seen in the films instead of these poor imitations?
