Can someone please explain why Damon all ways showed up with a con quạ in the first season!! Thank you!

In the books, the ma cà rồng that drink human blood can develope an ability of appearing in the form of animals. The animal that Damon chose to appear as was a large crow. I guess they wanted to add a similar ability to the Damon in the show. But later, they gave up this idea.
