also the more used monologues are so well known to casting people that they will have high expectations as they probably will have scene many professional versions of it or they will expect in a certain way and you might interpret it differently, unless they ask for something specific the more unknown the less chance they have of already seeing it the better
if you come in with a fast paced brash monologue from say... 'stags and hens' your going to stand out against the 20 other Juliet's
I agree with you on the common Shakespearean monologues (for example, the classic "Romeo, Romeo" or "To Be or Not To Be"). I have only known one person to do a common monologue for her audition, and it was successful for two reasons: A) Because she did Hamlet as a female and B) Because she was a grad student and bloody amazing.
The monologues in my repetoire are Adriana from Comedy of Errors ("His company must do his minions grace") and Katherine from Henry VIII ("Sir, I desire you do me right and justice"). If one chooses to perform a Shakespearean monologue, they should choose one from a play that is not often done (other recommendations are Tamora "Stay, Roman Brethren! Gracious conqueror" or anything by Hermione or Paulina in "A Winter's Tale").
