was recently released on DVD in a four-disc set that includes all 16 episodes of Season 2.
Set almost 100 years after mankind nearly destroyed itself in a nuclear Armageddon, the surviving members of the human race aboard the orbiting “Ark” space station take the first step to recolonize Earth, by sending 100 juvenile delinquents back to the planet’s surface to see if it is habitable. In the first season, they discovered that the Earth is not quite what they imagined – and that they were not alone. Survivors from the nuclear apocalypse have broken into dangerous factions including The Grounders, Reapers and Mountain Men. The first season finale found all of the survivors of the Ark returning to the surface, while The 100 fought for their lives against the Grounders. In Season Two, our heroes find themselves alternately challenged, supported and betrayed by their own people and alliances with the Grounders, but always manage to reach common ground in survival, as they face off against the lethal forces of Mount Weather, whose civilized environment masks a horrible secret.
is one of those shows that your friends may not have heard of, but once you loan them the DVD set or make them watch on Netflix or someplace like that, they are hooked. The show is not afraid of killing characters — and just as much, certain characters’ survival might come as just as much of a surprise. Dynamics have changed as the “grown ups” have landed on Earth, and Mount Weather adds new conflicts to the picture.
Now, of course you need to watch Season 1 before you get into Season 2; once you’ve done that, this set is highly recommended, because the characters, the stories, and the cast seem to go in unexpected places. It is a shame that this isn’t the highest-rated show on The CW, because it’s that good.
Season 2 has opening credits (yay!) and a lot of new dynamics, as previously mentioned. Not everyone will survive through the whole season. There’s even unexpected romance. See for yourself.
The Extras: “Unlocking the Mountain” takes a look at Mount Weather and is by far the best feature on the set. While I respect and am impressed by the “stunts pre-vis” feature, it seemed to go a bit long to keep my attention… action should be shown quickly, rather than slowly, but that’s just my opinion. The 2014 Comic-Con panel is included, as are deleted scenes and a gag reel.
Packaging Design: Such an attractive cast and not one of them is on the cover? Way to be vague, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.
The Complaint: I was very disappointed when I realized that
was not available on Blu-ray as the first season had been. This show is beautiful and is great to see in high-definition; plus, the Blu-ray aspect would put it ahead of, say, a Netflix viewing. For the completist in me, it’ll also be weird to have Season 2 DVD on the shelf next to my Season 1 Blu-ray. I guess I’ll have to deal.
Is It Worth It? Yes, though like I said, a Blu-ray version would be better.
