They have a deep connection so its definitly more than friendship. I loved the way stefan lingered after caroline closed the door lyk he really wanted to go in there and comfort her.

They definitely have a close friendship. I was getting a little more from Stefan though at the end when he was smiling at her... it's subtle but its there.

I think they love each other like siblings and it's a big step. You saw in season 1 Stefan didn't want to be Carrie's boyfriends and comparison he wanted to save her life and cared for her.
