The conclusion of season 2 left Crane (Tom Mison) and Lieutenant Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie) having triumphed over evil but their actions resulted in the death of Katrina Crane (Katia Winter), who was the target of considerable fan scorn. We’re told the third season will “explore how the partnership between Crane and Mills will evolve and what challenges these two witnesses will now face.”

The renewal comes after the Monday drama suffered a precarious viewership drop during its sophomore season that had some fans worried about its fate. Given Campbell’s recent resume of procedural crime dramas, one expects season 3 of

to have a less serialized and more threat-of-the-week format. Oftentimes when serialized shows get into ratings trouble, the instinct is to make it easier for fans to dive back in on any given week (a note the show has already received).
