Shattered Heart
The Drunken Man
I am sitting in a small bar, drinking a virgin dâu, dâu tây daiquiri, when a man stumbles towards me. He appears quite drunk, and he keeps calling out, “Marie, Marie!” I pretend not to notice, but it’s pretty obvious that his target is me. When he reaches my seat, he swallows me in a big chịu, gấu hug. I hold my breath since he smells of beer, and think “Who is this man?” When he finally lets me go, he is still beaming at me, so I fake a smile and say, “Um, hi?”
He whacks me on the back with a huge grin. “Long time, no see, Marie! Ha-ha, I just rhymed!” he chuckles. “I see ya still don’t take the strong stuff, eh?” He chuckles again as he gulps down another beer. I squeak out a pitiful giggle. “Yeah, well, bạn know me,” I say, even though I have no idea who this crazy man is. I quickly think of an escape plan. “I was actually about to go, so…” “No, wait!” the man shouts, “Don’t go! bạn should stay so we can talk about the old times.” I stifle a frustrated scream. “No really, I must go,” I say again, but the man suddenly grips my arm. It is a strong grip that I cannot get out of. I mentally kick myself for not bringing my cell phone. And the people around here don’t look very trustworthy. But suddenly his death grip releases my arm, and he bursts into tears.
A Confession
“I’m sorry Marie, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean it, I swear,” he sobs. I’m seriously confused, and a little curious, so I sit down and prod him to tell me more. “Well, bạn went to Forestville High School, right?” I nod slowly, feeling a little wary. “And—and your boyfriend Evan Stephens disappeared and was declared dead, r-right?” My tim, trái tim stops. I feel sick. Only a person who went to Forestville would know that. “How—h-how did bạn know?” The man appears very nervous. “He…isn’t dead.” My head is spinning. “I don’t believe you,” I say in a shaky voice. He takes a deep breath. “Well, he seemed to have mysteriously disappeared, but really he ran off with...Kacela.” My tim, trái tim shatters to pieces. I literally see the world swirl black before me. Kacela…the girl who comforted me when Evan had “died” and đã đưa ý kiến I would find happiness again someday. Kacela…who helped my pain slowly ease away. Kacela…my best friend. Liar. I manage to stammer out, “How can I trust you?” He looks down. “Because I am Evan.”
Running Away
I stop breathing. Literally. My chest tightens up, and I barely hear Evan say, “Are bạn okay? Marie?” And I think, “Yep, I’m ‘okay’. Never better. Like a girl isn’t completely heartbroken after she finds out her supposedly-dead-boyfriend-of-her-dreams is alive. Not to mention he was alive, living with her supposedly best friend, while she was shattered for nearly 10 years.”
And then, all that sadness turns to anger. I pick up the largest thing close to me and swing. And I don’t stop swinging until all I see is a bloody, bruised heap of flesh before me. Maybe it was a little harsh, but I had to let it all out. People are shouting and pointing at me, but I run out the door and leave my shattered tim, trái tim behind.
