\'s fourth season is almost upon us, and one of its main stars has hinted at big tests ahead for his character.

Richard Rankin has opened up about his character Roger Wakefield\'s transformation from his debut in season two as the "historian with a big heart", admitting that the next season will change him and his relationship with Brianna Randall (Sophie Skelton).

"I had to take him on a journey, an evolution of that character, that\'s believable for me, and to show in him the experiences that he goes through, the trials that he goes through in season four," the actor told Digital Spy.

"There are things he has to do in season four that tests his relationship with Brianna and various other characters.

"The effect that it has on him, and showing that, and showing that evolution of that character, and how that changes through season four... I feel like it takes me to a place in season four where he becomes a different guy. He\'s a different guy from what I started with."

Rankin also admitted that playing with that evolution is "absolutely" why he signed up for the part in the first place.

"It was one of the principle reasons for taking the part, for taking on Roger," he continued. "It was that, pretty much – it was where he was headed, and what he was going to be doing, rather than where he is in season two and season three.

"He was still an important part of the story, but I suppose the kind of meat of the part, the heart and soul of Roger, really becomes clear in this season."

"I remember it was intimidating for me, especially coming in in season two, because of the expectation that people have for your portrayal of the role," Rankin recalled of first joining the show.

"That can be pretty scary, because they\'re so familiar with the world, and, in some cases, they maybe know these characters better than some of the actors. So that can be quite a daunting prospect."

As for season five and when production begins, the actor teased: "I don\'t know. I suppose February? But I don\'t actually know. I don\'t think they have a set date to start filming. We don\'t have a confirmed date. I don\'t think we have a confirmed date."

season 4 is on Amazon Prime Video from November 5.
