December 1st is World AIDS Day, which makes it the perfect ngày to begin Human Rights Awareness tháng here on Fanpop.

Now the disease itself is not a human rights concern. True, the HIV epidemic is devastating, but we can't charge the virus with human rights violations. What is a human rights concern is the lack of preventative measures, as well as treatment for those infected, the world over. Secondly, the stigma of being HIV positive is still a nguồn of major discrimination. And that is definitely a human rights concern.

In order to help with the discrimination problem, the World AIDS ngày Official Website has a danh sách of link. I'm going to danh sách some of them here.

HIV is spread through bodily fluids, specifically blood, semen, vaginal fluids and breast milk. bạn can not catch HIV bởi touching, hugging, hoặc even kissing someone who is infected. The most common ways of spreading the disease are through unprotected sex (any kind of sexual activity, including vaginal, anal, and oral), sharing needles, and from mother to child in pregnancy hoặc breastfeeding. So clearly, the best ways to protect yourself from getting infected is to always use condoms when having sex. Never, ever share needles. I'm also going to throw in the propagandistic "just don't do drugs" period. Then bạn don't have to worry about infected needles. Don't fret about hospitals and needles-- they always sterilize. And if they don't, bạn can sue them.

link, the United Nations agency combating the disease, says that "The risk of HIV infection and its impact feeds on violations of human rights, including discrimination against women and marginalized groups such as sex workers, people who inject drugs and men who have sex with men. HIV also frequently begets human rights violations such as further discrimination and violence... Protecting human rights and promoting public health are mutually reinforcing."

There are many countries whose discriminatory laws contribute to the spread of the disease. Some examples include laws prohibiting consensual homosexuality and impeding access to birth control. Some nations disallow access to condoms and needles for prison inmates. With needles and condoms in short supply, they use what they can get, hoặc find ways around it. Countries use residency status and border control to keep prevention and care services away.

The so-called "virgin myth," hoặc the idea that sex with a virgin can cure AIDS, has contributed to thousands of child rapes in South Africa. Not only do they endure rape, these children are also infected, and often impregnated with their rapist's child. This leads to higher HIV positive births.

"The protection of human rights," says UNAIDS, "both of those vulnerable to infection and those already infected, is not only right, but also produces positive public health results against HIV." UNAIDS is working to improve and protect human rights, in order to help stop the spread of AIDS, and treat infected persons. It's laws and social attitudes that stand in the way of universal access to treatment and care.

This is a lot of work. But bạn can do something for people infected with AIDS in your own community, and do your part to dispel the stigma against those infected. If bạn want to volunteer, link is an excellent website that will tell bạn of volunteer opportunities in your area.

If bạn don't have the time to volunteer, then simply remember this: People infected with HIV hoặc AIDS are not bad people. They are not necessarily gay hoặc drug addicts, but even if they are, they're still human beings and deserve your tình yêu and support. Heterosexuals and people who have never touched a drug in their lives can also be HIV positive. bạn will not catch the virus bởi hugging them, hoặc touching them, hoặc even kissing them. They are no better hoặc worse than bạn are. Remember that, and spread it. Because even in the "Western World," there is a social stigma that needs to be eradicated, and bạn can do your part to do that.

This is thêm of a rant than a well-thought out article, but since this here is called "soap-box", I am going to use it.

I'm currently nghề viết văn my paper for my Human Rights class. Sometimes I come upon các bài viết that are so messed up...

I can understand các bài viết that argue for example for economic interests against human rights. I do not agree with those, but at least they have often an argumentation that makes sense.

But the bài viết I just read... it was actually published in a booklet bởi Amnesty International. I have no idea why they put that in there. Maybe to hiển thị how ridiculous some argumentations...

I’ve been thinking about human rights in art and literature. Two specific things come to mind. In my English class, we read Melville’s Billy Budd, a Christian allegory about impressed sailors. In my anthropology human rights class, we talked about “the Rights of Man,” bởi Thomas Paine and my mind drifted to the name of Billy’s original ship, the Rights-of-Man (abbreviated to “Rights.”) It was an obvious allusion to Thomas Paine. It was incredibly blatant symbolism that Billy was impressed onto a ship called the Indomitable. Impressment is just one of the times in history in which...

Half-arsed attempt at an image for this năm
Half-arsed attempt at an image for this year
For Fanpop's third annual Human Rights Awareness month, which I have organized every năm since 2008 (OK, for two years), I am going to do...

Absolutely nothing.

And I am terribly guilty about it. hoặc I was. I'm disgustingly busy this year, so much that I barely have time to fanpop at all, let alone head an entire campaign that, let's be honest, only a handful of people on fanpop really care about anyway.

But I know that the people đọc this bài viết are part of that handful of people who do care about Human Rights, and about HRAM on fanpop this December, and were maybe even wondering, "Hey,...
