When the death train finally stops, I am surprised to find myself still alive. I am not surprised to finding dead bodies littered all around me. Miraculously, my mother is still alive, but my sisters were not so lucky. I feel no emotion—I have no heart. A German scoops the dead out of our cart. Later, he tosses a bucket of water in our cart. The five of us alive scramble to slurp the wet goodness that we had been longing to for 8 days. It was not much, but it was better than nothing. We were ordered out of the cart. I was relieved to be out of that filthy place. Once we were out, I noticed there was nothing around. Suddenly, many German soldiers appear out of nowhere. “LOS!” they order us. The five of us and the other miraculously alive Jews begin to jog. “Run, bạn filthy, good-for-nothing, animals!” another German soldier shouts. We quickly start to run, even though it burns. Whenever we slow down, a German points a gun at us, so that keeps us motivated to keep running, no matter what. My mother is gasping for breath. I want to help her, but I cannot risk it. When I attempt to slow down little for her, someone pushes me ahead and hisses, “You don’t want to die, do you?” I keep running. Then, my mother collapses. I hear a gunshot. I know she is dead. I keep running. My mind wanders to forget the secret pain that burns of all the deaths that have happened. I realize I have no one to go to if I make it alive in this. I envy the people who at least still have their family bởi their side. They’ll have someone to talk to, even with death in the air. But for me, I have no one.
