Harry chose to be in Gryffindor rather than be in Slytherin and get involved in the Dark Arts. This is what made him different from Tom Riddle/Voldemort. He'd have been likely to befriend at least some of the Slytherin students, leading to later conflict due to so many of them having Death Eater parents or relatives.
