George R.R. Martin sends Jaime Lannister to the Riverlands to negotiate an end to the siege of Riverrun. With the war largely won by the Lannisters, Riverrun stands as one of the final holdouts, with Brynden “The Blackfish” standing against Emmon Frey, son of Walder Frey.

Since Jaime was sent to Dorne instead of Riverrun in

Season 5, it was reasonable to assume that this particular saga from the dwindling War of the Five Kings was skipped over. But now it looks like

Season 6 will play out this plot and send Jaime and Bronn to kick out the remaining Tullys (spoilers: it works). 

But what happens then? This is where things get interesting, with potential spoilers for both

. Since Brienne has also been spotted on location at Riverrun, this drama might just have an additional turn. 

Brienne of Tarth is last seen leading Jaime into what seems to be an obvious trap. While we’ve yet to see the outcome, to all appearances it looks like Brienne is giving up Jaime to Lady Stoneheart (a resurrected Catelyn Stark), betraying a new friend to her former master.
