Chapter 1. The Raid, Preparations and Expectations
It was a normal Sunday night, filled with food, friends, and laughter. hoặc so they wished. Things couldn’t be normal when bạn lived in a forgotten, subterranean military base. hoặc when bạn had to send out a large group just to be an toàn, két an toàn when getting the needed supplies. When society was deadly and bạn feared for your very existence. This is what the Souls (better known as parasites among the humans) had brought…
Clara stood on one of the many old, metal tables. With her small, soft voice, she attempted to attract the attention everyone. But she was failing.
“Hey!” Corinne’s voice boomed strong over the ruckus.
The room quieted, all eyes turned to Corinne and Clara.
“Clara has something to say,” she added.
“Thanks Corinne,” Clara whispered.
Corinne smiled and resumed her seat, “Anytime.”
Clara took a deep breath, “The raid is tommorow,” she was very straightforward, “We’ve been preparing all week and now we’ve got to run through the procedures…”
“Clara, not again!” Linden complained, “Either bạn hoặc Aidan reminds us every time we’re about to leave for a raid. I think we know what to do.”
“You’re one to talk!” Julian snapped, which caused Anneliese to shudder a bit, “You nearly got us into some real hot water last time!”
“It was an accident!” Linden insisted.
“Accident is an understatement Linden,” Derek clarified, “You charged an armed Seeker!”
“How was I suppose to know it was a Seeker?” Linden demanded.
“Common sense,” Liana suggested.
“Liana’s right,” Daniel said, “Seekers are the only parasites that carry guns. bạn should have seen that and backed down.”
Linden jumped from his seat, “The half-witted body snatcher was concealing it! How was I suppose to see?”
“Alright, enough of this!” Eric roared, “Half of us are leaving for nearly a tháng tommorow and this conversation is getting us nowhere! Linden keep your mouth shut so Clara can finish what she was saying.”
Linden unwillingly resumed his seat, his lips twisted into a grimace. Elina kissed his cheek and patted his shoulder reassuringly.
Clara continued as if she hadn’t been interrupted. She explained how they would break off into groups, how and who would keep the van in a day’s reach from everyone, and most importantly, what to do if they were spotted hoặc caught.
“And be careful,” Erika added.
“We don’t need a repeat of last time bạn guys went out,” Renee muttered.
Linden started to say something, but Elina quickly hushed him.
“So everyone get some rest,” búp bê barbie mentioned, “We’ve got a big ngày tommorow.”
…
“Please, don’t go,” Anneliese pleaded.
Julian sighed, “Anneliese, bạn know I have to.”
“No, bạn don’t have to,” Anneliese đã đưa ý kiến firmly, trying to mask uneasiness the in her voice.
“But if I don’t, Clara will kill me,” Julian claimed.
“Clara won’t kill you,” Anneliese mumbled.
“No,” Julian countered, “But Corinne will.”
Anneliese plopped down on the bed, “But-”
Julian cut her off mid-sentence, “Anneliese please,” he sat beside her, “we have this conversation every time there’s a raid. Either bạn don’t want me to go, hoặc I don’t want bạn to go. I don’t want to fight about this, not again.”
Anneliese shuddered slightly at the mention of that. It hadn’t been a terrible fight, but according to her standards, it had been pretty bad. That week had been stressful and scary for the both, being that it had been when the occupation had just begun. Just the very word ‘raid’ had the girls, Anneliese especially, cowering in terror. So, of course it was natural for her to cry, and plead, and beg him not to go. But supplies had been dangerously low, making a raid necessary. And when he tried to explain this to her, she became even thêm upset. The feelings she had bottled inside (which was still a bad habit for the both) came out in a rushed, unplanned scream. He had tried to stay calm and collective, but it was clear her screams had been pushing him over the edge. And then he snapped as well.
Anneliese shook her head and pulled herself free from the memory.
“Promise me you’ll be careful,” she finally whispered.
Julian smiled “I promise, I won’t charge an armed Seeker.”
Anneliese laughed a bit and gently pressed her lips to his. If he was leaving for nearly a month, she’d better give him a proper goodbye.
