British export Andrew Lincoln is phenomenal as Rick Grimes, a man forced to re-evaluate everything he believes about law, order and humanity when he wakes from a coma to find himself the only survivor in a town overrun by the living dead.

Then there\'s Jon Bernthal - utterly magnetic as Rick\'s friend-turned-rival Shane Walsh, who is put through his own transformation by the violence of this new age.

Though he emerges early on as a strong candidate for leader, his growing animosity towards Rick threatens to drive Shane over the edge - and there\'s no going back once he executes one of his poor fellow survivors

In later episodes, Danai Gurira excels as the warrior Michonne - a woman who\'s lost everything and everyone, and had to rebuild, putting up a formidable wall in the process with the aid of her trusty samurai sword.

It helps, of course, that this stellar cast have such high-quality scripts to work with - stories that allow their characters to go on riveting and surprising journeys.

There\'s our lead character Rick. He\'s first glimpsed in the pilot as a clean-cut everyman, but the zombie apocalypse that follows utterly transforms this one-time

He\'s a man who\'s sometimes difficult to like -remember when he assumed command of the human refuge Alexandria practically at gunpoint? But you\'ll find yourself utterly unable to take your eyes off him regardless.

Fan favourite Daryl starts out mad, bad and dangerous to know - a hot-headed thug living in the shadow of his bigger, meaner elder brother Merle (Michael Rooker). Over time, he matures, becoming one of the most trusted members of Rick\'s gang... and one of the wisest, though without ever losing that slightly feral edge.

The most surprising evolution, though, has to be Carol\'s. Beginning the show as a meek housewife, belittled by a boorish husband, this captivating character ends up somewhere entirely different.

Believe it or not, there\'s room for romance even in a zombie apocalypse - and

about its characters and the attachments they form in these most unlikely of circumstances.

Most notable is the love story between quietly heroic Glenn (Steven Yeun) and fearless Maggie (Lauren Cohan) - a couple utterly devoted to each other who\'d never have met if not for the end of the world.

Their relationship has been tested by cruel twists of fate and terrible tragedy, but these two are

\'s unbreakable pairing, \'til death do them part...

Then there\'s the relationships that might be. Though both are troubled souls

- yet have formed an improbable attachment and make for a fascinatingly odd couple.

Then there\'s the uncertain tension between Rick and Michonne. Both are physically and emotionally scarred by their experiences, but could they find solace in each other - or even romance?

And the purely platonic relationships on the show are no less compelling. Played out across six seasons, Rick\'s fragile friendship with the troubled Morgan (Lennie James) is one of the show\'s most fascinating dynamics.

Both started out as men of peace, but have taken very different paths since their first meeting - and now Morgan must decide if he can stay loyal to a man who truly believes that \'kill or be killed\' is the best policy for survival.

There\'s more than just those pesky flesh-eaters to contend with in this depraved new world.

Perhaps the show\'s most notorious villain of all is the Governor, played with a chilly menace by David Morrissey - and like his co-star Lincoln, another Brit.

He\'s a charismatic, even sympathetic menace - one whose good intentions end up so twisted, he becomes a merciless, power-mad dictator, willing to take lives to make a point.
