I consider him extremely brave and very intelligent, but I think his personality best suits where he was. As he proves, just because bravery is Gryffindor's noted trait, doesn't mean all the brave belong there, just as Hermione still fits in gryffindor imo despite Ravenclaw-style intellect being her most obvious skill.
His double agenting didn't just prove his bravery, it proved his cunning and his ability to put logic before nobility when it's the right thing to do in the long run. For example, I don't think a stereotypical Gryffindor would be able to stoically sit through the killings and torture without helping that Snape did, even though he did it for the greater good. I think the life he lived and sacrifices he made was a testament to his positive slytherin qualities, and his spite towards Harry and tendency for favouritism was a sign of his negative slytherin qualities.
I consider him very brave, very smart (probably good at finding, lol) but a fitting slytherin.

Also, he hated Gryffindor. Why would he be placed in it? He didn't like any other house, anyway.

Slytherin all the way. And we don't know how he felt about Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff, really. If James and Sirius hadn't have decided to have a pissing contest with him over Sorting on their way to Hogwarts, he **might** have ended up in Ravenclaw. But once they decided to be asses about it, I think Slytherin was firmly cemented in Sev's mind.

You can't really judge the individual by the House the Hat sorted them into; Andromeda Black was a Slytherin, and look at her...she did alright, being disowned and marrying Ted Tonks and all. ;)

But really, not everyone in Gryffindor is good, not everyone in Slytherin is bad.

He belongs in Slytherin, but I think he would have had a much easier life if he'd been sorted into Gryffindor or even one of the other houses.

^I was thinking, even as I typed my post, of Sev in Hufflepuff, and it kinda made me giggle. Little 11-year-old Hufflepuff Severus. <3 <3

^Lol. I think it would have been the house that would have done him the most good. "Hufflepuff is the most inclusive among the four houses, valuing hard work, patience, friendship and fair play...Students belonging to this house are known to be hard-working, friendly, loyal, and non-judgemental".link Severus needed to be accepted, needed friendship as well as loyal people around him. He also needed to learn to be non-judgemental and more patient. Hufflepuff would have provided all of that for him.

I really cannot see Severus as a Gryffindor. He's brave - there's no denying that - but so were other Slytherins (Regulus, Narcissa) and Raveclaws (Luna) and Hufflepuffs (Cedric, Tonks). Bravery isn't exclusive to only Gryffindors. And, as someone pointed out, he hated Gryffindor. And, as we know, the hat takes personal choices into consideration.

He's good where he is - he belongs to Slytherin. But I picked Ravenclaw because he could have been sent there.

Maybe the question should have been : Where COULD he have been sorted into ?

He's got the qualities of the 4 houses actually.

He lived like a Slytherin, worked like a Ravenclaw, loved like a Hufflepuff and died like a Gryffindor.

He's a Slytherin, but he's the best kind of Slytherin. Presuming Salazar Slytherin wasn't the psychotic monster history remembers him as I think Severus Snape is exactly the kind of person he imagined his house to represent. But he would probably have been more happy in Ravenclaw.

He's fine in Slytherin it suits his personality more beside bravery.
And if you want something from his personality in Hufflepuff theres his loyalty to Dumbledore, Lily and Harry :)
Hufflepuff is a nice house I dont know why some people hate the house they're hardworking and very protective for others and loyalty people rarely have these personality not to mention patience :).

He definetely belongs in Slytherin due to his dark nature, but my second choice would definetely be Gryfindor.

If you use the criteria used by the sorting hat then he belongs in Slytherin, however I think if you were to pick based on which house would exert a better influence on Snape then I'd pick Hufflepuff.

I've always thought Snape exemplified the true Slytherin.

His strength of will towards attaining his goals, his cunning used towards attaining his goals, holding to his own honor in search of his goals, his bravery in facing adversary to obtain his own goals,
his intelligence always running working on the next move....I do rather think that he was and some part of him was still very self oriented. I think it was Lily that got him to turn from being, well, can you imagine all of Severus' qualities turned towards becoming the next Dark Lord. If he had not truly loved Lily, if it had been only an infatuation that he reacted badly to, I could see him becoming bitter and deciding that Mudbloods were not worthy of his time and should be done away with, but his real love of Lily, even in the face of her turning to another, is what tempered his fire, and turned him from becoming a nuclear bomb preped to destroy everything, and into an elegant blade, striking in its perfection.

(passing thought, no wonder there is so much fanfic out there with Snape as a vampire, he reads as if he plays the long game, working towards an outcome that only he can see through so much of the books, regardless of what others believe him to be.)
