I don't know why but I've always thought it was Walts shoe which makes no sense because he had two shoes on when we first saw him in the pilot :S

That's the great thing about this show it's the little details that matter most.

I think it was just a shoe that was thrown there by the crash. Also, I don't know how anybody could remember something as obscure as this.

I'm guessing that its one of Kate's shoes..dunno if u guys remember Kate was looking for shoes at the first few episodes of season 1..

I think it was just supposed to signify people dying. It was supposed to make us feel sad. But overall to the show, I don't believe it is significant.
