I mean, he didn't even know who he was. Clearly he hasn't even read the books. I think it's important to have someone who's read the books, so they can better know their character.
Also, I think it's important that the actors at least liked the books, just so they're more likely to act better and put more effort into the roles if it's for something they like, if that makes sense.
