zanhar1 I'm going to apologize in advance because this is probably going to turn into a long-arse rant, that's kind of how I roll. But I'm gonna try to be nice about it. I hope it doesn't bother you. [i]I’ve seen this all over the place, and it’s just as stupid every time it comes up. Korra might be as irritable and aggressive as she was at the beginning of Book One, but her experience with Amon is vital to understanding her issues as of the beginning of Book Two.[/i] I actually do agree with this, but I also disagree. I feel like she has learned from her expirance with Amon due to her willingness and readiness to connect with the spirit world. But I do think she doesn't appreciate it as she used it to beat Ikki in a race. She went into the Avatar state for child's play. But she was willing to be taught how to use it right. I just don't like how she abandoned her dad and Tenzin so easily to do so. I think it was a brash decision. Good intentions, poor way to go about it. [i]Here’s the thing. Constant training and limited companionship? That was normal for early Book One Korra. She rebelled against it initially because she didn't feel like she learning anything, not because she thought she was being mistreated.[/i] I can see how this person would get this. I personally don't feel like she was mistreated. Let's look at this from a parents point of view. Much like a teen told she couldn't attend a rock concert Korra was told not to pro-bend. Much like a dad, Tenzin was just trying to keep Korra safe. He was mad when she left because he was worried about her. And he disciplined her because he was worried. He also yelled at her for accepting Tarrlock's 'lets just face Amon right here right now' offer because it was reckless and could have gotten her hurt. He wasn't mistreating her he was looking out for her. On the flipped side; all teens feel mistreated when told what to do. It is sort of natural for her age. [i]I think the key point is the background for which she’s acting as ‘rebellious’ as she is. In Book 1, she turned away from Tenzin’s teaching because she felt she was failing and couldn’t live up to the expectations, in book 2 she’s turning away from him and her father because she feels they are trying to control her and pull her in a direction she doesn’t necessarily want to go. [/i] I can see this happening. The stricter the parent the more likely the rebellion. I can see how she'd feel like he was failing her and leaving because she thought he couldn't teach her is reasonable. But I feel as though she wasn't putting in much effort to learn from him. Sort of like how if a student hate their math teacher they won't try as hard. So this works both ways. Tenzin should have tried to teach Korra less strictly, but in return Korra should have worked harder and tried to learn using Tenzin's methods. [i]She’s not just being ‘immaturely rebellious’ for no reason; she’s questioning because she’s realized that she is a person who has the right for an agency of her own. Her father keeps treating her like she can’t handle independence and trust, and that’s frustrating for her because she feels she deserves that, she feels she needs that. [/i] I do admit to feeling like Korra is immaturely rebellious. But I also feel like she has a reason. I feel like her father, like Tenzin, just wants to protect her. And that is normal for a parent. Like wise it's normal for a teen to get annoyed by a parents' protectiveness. And I personally feel like most teenagers are immature like that. [i]Because this what she learned from Book 1, that she’s a person outside of being the Avatar, and people shouldn’t just boss her around with the excuse “this is what the Avatar should do”. No, Korra has a personal right to be respected and to decide for herself, and this obviously sticks deeper than the current situation. Korra has been controlled and locked up her entire life, and then she finds out that it’s for the wrong reasons, reasons that she’s literally been lied to about. She doesn’t feel respected, she doesn’t feel supported, and all she really wants is to figure out who she’s supposed to be, as a person and as the Avatar.[/i] I can see this one too. No one likes to be bossed around. But on the flipped side I feel like she bosses people around too (she was yelling at Mako for talking to her dad). I feel like Korra is doing the very thing she hates to other people. I do agree however, that Korra has the right to keep her Avatar life separate. I know for a fact I like to keep my work life and my personal life separate. But that's hard to do with any job; particularly a job like the Avatar or a royal job. Why? Because that job basically [i]is[/i] your life. And that's what usually happens when you are born into a position of power of fated into a job like the Avatar. And being locked up and sheltered as Korra was definitely can create for a wild child upon giving the girl freedom. That's kind of a natural reaction. And yes I do agree she has the right to figure out who she is as the avatar and as a person. But I feel like she's hot headed about the whole situation.
