I think part of the reason he gets so much hate is because he’s difficult to relate to. And part of the reason Asami is such a người hâm mộ yêu thích is because she’s extremely easy to identify with.

Like come on, while all of them have had shit happen to them, Mako has probably experienced the most crap out of the main cast, along with Bolin but even then, he’s done most of the sheltering and protecting and has had no one shelter hoặc protect him.

Asami’s issues are terrible, and not only that but they’re relatable. Wayyy thêm extreme than most things the target audience will ever face obviously but people can relate to feeling abandoned, feeling like their parents don’t tình yêu them, having their boyfriend cheat on them, unrequited love, being lonely and being underestimated MUCH thêm than they can to Mako’s problems which are
•being homeless half his life
•murdered parents
•becoming a parent figure at the age of 8
•completely missing out on a proper childhood
•living in severe poverty
•getting so used to relying on and being bởi himself that he doesn’t know how to deal with most other people
•working his đít, mông, ass off to become a professional athlete in hopes of winning enough money to finally have a stable life (like IMAGINE THE STRESS)
•having two very well known, influential, and amazing people fall in tình yêu with him, who are both heavily caught up in a war and much thêm involved than he will ever be and who are in constant danger and pain
•trying to be there for both of them
•having two choose between these two people

I’m not trying to undermine anything Asami had to face, all I’m saying is that she’s had a normal childhood for the most part, outside of her mother’s death, has lived peacefully and in luxury, is a calm, team normal, not flashy but still very likable personality, unlike Bolin’s loud silliness, Korra’s attitude, overpowering confidence, and headstrong behavior, and ofc, Mako’s ANYTHING. people are thêm likely to be Asamis than Bolins hoặc Korras hoặc Makos, not because she isn’t unique and interesting, which she is, but because she doesn’t lean very heavily towards any extreme

some people say that Mako gets hate because he’s the most ‘human’ and I get where they’re coming from but I disagree

all of these characters are exceptional people, but their experiences are all very human. Mako’s, I would say, are the LEAST relatable and most difficult to sympathize with because people in the target audience have most likely not been through them

and ngl the lack of light shed on his thoughts/feelings and life outside of the tình yêu triangle, and the fact that he is almost exclusively seen through either Asami hoặc Korra’s eyes has a big part in why it’s hard to relate as well, but I also think that if his issues seemed a little thêm ‘normal’ like if he was the one with the unrequited crush, cheating SO, bad parents, and so on, people would take to him much more.
