Nina Dobrev On ‘Vampire Diaries’ Departure: ‘The Fairytale Has To End’ 

We’re not quite ready to say goodbye to Elena Gilbert yet, but Nina Dobrev is ready to ‘graduate.’ In a new interview, she remembers her dramatic last scene, and the next chapter. Get your tissues ready, ‘TVD’ fans.

, we’re still not sure how Elena Gilbert will exit. However, Nina Dobrev just hinted at her “beautiful” last scene, what she’ll miss the most from set, and how her

“It’s been a great journey, but at the end of the day, I’m not actually a vampire. The fairy tale has to end, and the next chapter has to begin,” Nina, 26, told 

Nina also revealed that she’s known for years that this was the end, but has hope that she’ll stay close to her costars.

“I am very sad that I’m not going to get to spend every day with my favorite people in the world, but, that’s why we have FaceTime and phone calls,” she said. “Friendships are like vampires: They’ll last forever if they’re real.”

‘TVD’ Finale — Will Elena Die?

While we’re not sure if Elena will pull through on the May 14 finale of 

, we do know that she’s not going to be in great shape.

“I’m in the hospital. That’s in the promo, [so] I can tell you that,” she said. “I spent a lot of time, horizontal, lying down. I fell asleep a couple of times during takes because I had to pretend to be unconscious.”

And she revealed that her last scene was shot between Elena and Damon — and that she was very aware of it being the end.

“My last scene was with Ian Somerhalder [Damon], and we were shooting a scene I can’t talk about outside that was very beautiful,” she said. “I’m in a gown, we’re outside somewhere, and the last shot, a camera operator came up and said there was something in my hair, was trying to help me, and then he pulled me into a bear hug so I couldn’t escape, while the entire crew got a cake and whipped cream and dumped it all over my body.”
