What does "facing one's own mortality" mean?

I've heard people say it before, but not fully understood what it meant. In a movie, this mother đã đưa ý kiến her son had to face his own mortality. And he was dying, because that was what the movie was about, for the most part. Does it mean that you're coming to terms that everybody dies? And bạn will, too, some day?
