“I came back for my sweater, and I noticed Manor go into his room. I followed him and he attacked me. He was about to inject some kind of solution into Skipper, then into me. In the end, he ended up injecting himself.” Eve was reporting to the guard.
It was about an giờ after it’d happened now, and guards had come to câu hỏi Eve, who were now outside of Skipper’s room. A team of paramedics were brought in to check out Skipper and Eve. At the moment, a nurse was cleaning and sewing up Eve’s wound, who was lying on her side on a gurney. Manor’s body had been taken out of the room, and a paramedic was tending to Skipper. “Alright, Skipper, take a deep breath and blow for me, okay?” The nurse told him unhooking the tube from the intubator. Skipper nodded. “Ready? Breathe in—” Skipper took a deep breath in— “Now blow.” Skipper exhaled and the nurse pulled the tube out of his esophagus. Skipper coughed to clear the resulting tingle from the tube and the nurse gave him a cup of ice water. He gratefully let the cool drink moisten up his parched mouth and glide down his throat.
“Good. Now let me remove the needle from your vein.” Skipper looked down at the needle in his flipper and gulped. He looked away and tensed as the paramedic removed the line. “Not good with needles, ey? Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone.” Skipper looked down shyly and drank some thêm water. “How do bạn feel?”
Skipper cleared his throat and nodded. “I’m…I’m fine.”
“You’re probably starving. Give me a một phút and I’ll bring bạn something to keep bạn for the night.”
She was about to leave when Skipper said: “Actually…I’m really not that hungry. In fact, I feel a little nauseous.”
“Ah, well, the doctor did mention nausea as one of the side effects. You’re sure bạn at least don’t want something light?”
“Nah, with this prison food, nothing much is gonna settle well anyway.” Skipper joked. The paramedic smiled and nodded in understanding, then she collected her things and left.
The guard who was questioning Eve stopped her on her way out. “Did everything check out okay?” He asked.
“A little nauseous, but otherwise unharmed.” She answered. Eve let out a silent sigh of relief.
“Alright. Thank you, Diane.” Diane nodded with a smile and left. “So, Susan, do bạn know of any reason that Manor would want to harm Skipper?”
Eve thought for a moment, deciding whether to tell him of Alastair’s involvement. She decided against it; it would just bring up thêm questions. “No, I can’t think of any reason. Skipper hadn’t done anything wrong…to him that is.”
“Well, I suppose we’ll have to investigate more. Good night, Nurse.” The guard đã đưa ý kiến with a tip of his cap, then turned and entered Skipper’s room.
Eve clenched her fist, frustrated with the fact that she couldn’t tell anyone. A fireball of anger grew in the pit of her stomach. She could just kill Alastair for what he’d tried to do. But why did he do it?
“Alright, all finished.” The paramedic said, interrupting her thoughts. She came around to face her. “Take it slow. Don’t do anything strenuous or—”
“Or my stitches will come loose. I know. Thank you.” The paramedic smiled, collected her things, and left.
Meanwhile, the guard that had entered Skipper’s room restrained him to the giường with handcuffs. “Tomorrow, a nurse will examine you; if they deem bạn in perfect health, you’ll be sent back to the cells.” He explained.
Skipper nodded. “Alright.” He đã đưa ý kiến slowly, staring at the ceiling from his laying position. The guard took a moment to look at him. Skipper seemed to be deep in thought.
“Are bạn sure you’re feeling okay?”
Skipper thought for a moment. “Honestly…I don’t know. I just…I feel like there’s something I’ve forgotten. Something important.”
The guard nodded in understanding. “I know the feeling. But, as my wife always says, ‘If it’s worth remembering, you’ll remember it.’”
Skipper looked down for a moment, then nodded. “Thanks.” With a smile and a tip of his cap, the guard left the room.
Day 10
Eve woke with a groan. She was tired, sore, and her side still stung. She opened her window and squinted in the bright morning sunlight. After splashing some water in her face, she went into the mainroom where she saw Private and Kowalski. It was 0743 hours, and the sun was cut in half bởi the horizon. It’d been a rough night; all of them were pretty shaken up due to the nights’ events. Eve had been reluctant to leave the prison, afraid that Skipper may not yet be safe. Finally Kowalski convinced her and Private, who had also been reluctant, that Skipper was in good hands.
“I told bạn two to wake me at 0630.”
“Well, after last night, bạn needed all the rest bạn could get. I can’t believe Manor almost killed you.” Kowalski replied.
“Well, it’s not the first time my life’s been put at risk. bạn do realize that I’m going to be late for work now.”
“Considering your condition, they’ll let it slide. bạn know that they’d tried for almost a whole half giờ to convince bạn to take the week off. Luckily, bạn were able to hiển thị them just how stubborn bạn can be.” Kowalski joked. Eve smiled. “Are bạn sure you’re okay? That’s a pretty mean scar.” Kowalski asked pointing to her side.
Eve gently covered her wound with her flipper. “It’s just a scratch; I’ve had worse. Besides, I’m going to keep Skipper in the infirmary somehow. We’re doing it today. Inform Rico to be in the infirmary at 1800, and tell him to cause a distraction in the west wing. A big distraction.” Eve started walking toward the door.
“Are bạn sure it’s time?” Private asked.
Eve stopped at the door and turned to him. “Yes. It needs to go down ASAP.”
“Are bạn sure bạn don’t want any breakfast before bạn go?”
“No, I need to get there and be sure he stays in the infirmary before I’m too late. We’ll talk thêm on my break.” She opened the door to leave but stopped at the sound of Private’s voice.
“Are bạn sure you’re okay?”
Eve turned and put on a smile. “I’m fine. See bạn later.” She shut the door behind her and started on her way. She couldn’t help but think about the last time she’d gotten a serious side wound. That time it had been deeper than this time. She tried to push the painful memory away, but found it impossible to fight it. At last she allowed her mind to drift into the past.
She was on an assignment in Ecuador. The sun soared high in the clear sky, beating its heat down on anyone that crossed its path. Her unit was small; there was Derrick, a tall, well-built chim cánh cụt with eyes that never seemed to smile. There was Jonathan, the newbie who was young, with kind brown eyes that yet still seemed unsure, and appeared to be unable to run out of questions. There was Seth, who was probably the most full of it, always checking out his reflection and not caring for anyone but himself. And finally, there was Clark. She remembered how he’d always stuck bởi her side on missions, protecting her whenever she was in trouble; in fact, he did just as much even when there was no threat. Only this time, he wasn’t fast enough.
The five of them navigated through the jungle; it was about an giờ after docking on the coast. Eve was taking point, slashing through weeds and vines with a five inch blade. The mission was to eliminate someone who had double-crossed Alastair. However, unfortunately for them, they were expecting a comeback.
Eve continued slashing through the vines as they made their way through the jungle. “So does it ever get weird? Being the only female here?” John asked.
Eve rolled her eyes and answered without stopping. “Not with my policy.”
“What’s your policy?”
Eve twirled the dao, con dao around her flipper and cut through another shrub, then turned and pointed the dao, con dao at his throat, causing him to jump and stare with wide eyes. “It’s called, ‘touch me and you’re dead.’” She đã đưa ý kiến sternly, then turned back to cutting through the greenery, continuing on her way.
Another few yards and a gunshot was heard, followed bởi Eve being thrown off of her feet, crying out in pain. Clark and Derrick helped her to her feet and the five of them took off through the jungle, tripping over vines, roots, and fallen branches as they went. Eve could barely move. It had gone so fast; she wasn’t even sure where she’d been hit. Pain was coursing through her body and she was losing focus, the world around her getting fuzzier with every passing second. She heard thêm gunfire, though it sounded muffled and distant, along with the distorted rustle of the shrub beneath their feet and a voice saying things that she couldn’t make out. Finally, they fell into a dune, sliding to a stop. Clark held her close, and she mumbled in pain. Clark quietly shushed her and stroked her cheek, which was now covered in cold sweat. Seth and John waited for Derrick to give the all clear. All were silently trying to catch their breath as they processed what had just happened.
A few phút later, after the sounds of distant voices and rustling had ceased, Derrick gave the all-clear. Everyone let out a sigh of relief, all but Eve, who was lying on Clark’s chest, barely awake.
“Oh my God…what are we gonna do? Grunay is gonna kill us!” John đã đưa ý kiến in a panic.
“No he’s not. Eve will be fine.” Clark insisted.
“But…look at her wound…it’s so deep…” Seth đã đưa ý kiến staring at the wound in disbelief. Clark looked down at Eve’s side. The bullet had only grazed her, but it had grazed her in such a way that bạn could nearly see her ribcage. Blood poured from the wound, staining his and Eve’s feathers and the cỏ beneath them.
Eve was finally able to catch her breath and pulled away from Clark, then leaned against the slope of the ground. “Give me my bag.” She mumbled, cringing in pain. Clark grabbed the bag that lay on the ground and handed it to Eve, who opened it and took out a blanket. She moved slowly, trying not to make the wound worse than it was. She bit down on a corner of the blanket and ripped it in half, then took a bottle of water from the bag. She opened it up and looked at the wound, her flipper began to shake as she began to tip it over the wound…but Clark grabbed it to steady it. He took the bottle from her and held her flipper.
“Ready?” He asked her. Eve nodded. He slowly poured water over the wound and Eve cringed, clenching tightly onto Clark’s flipper. After pouring about half of it onto the wound, Clark took one of the blanket halves and pressed it firmly to her side.
“Here, use this.” Derrick removed the weapons from his thắt lưng, vành đai and handed the thắt lưng, vành đai to Clark, who wrapped it around Eve and tightly secured it to keep pressure on the wound.
Eve gently touched the side of Clark’s forehead, right tiếp theo to a cut that had just began to start bleeding. “Your head…”
Clark pushed her flipper away. “It’s just a scratch. We need to worry about you.” Eve slowly pushed herself into a sitting position, cringing with every inch. She reached into her bag and pulled out a needle and thread. “Come here.” She đã đưa ý kiến in a voice that cracked.
“No, Eve. I’m fine. bạn don’t need to—”
“Yes I do. Hold still.”
“But—”
“No buts. I am head of this unit and you’ll do as I say.” Clark sighed and leaned forward. Eve gently began sewing together the cut on Clark’s head. A few phút later, she cut the line and put the needle and thread back in her bag. “There, that wasn’t so hard, was it?”
Clark smiled slightly, but it faded when Eve cried out due to a spurt of pain that had coursed through her side. He turned to Derrick. “We need to get her out of here. She needs a doctor.”
“We can’t just abdicate the mission! Grunay would be furious! Not to mention what he’d do if he found out we let his daughter get shot!”
Eve turned her head to look at him. “You three go on. bạn can complete the mission without me. Derrick, you’re in charge. Clark will take me back. I’ll deal with Alastair.”
“But—!”
“No buts! I am first in command! Now go!” Jonathan, Seth, and Derrick looked at each other, then nodded and left.
After that, Eve couldn’t chịu, gấu to keep reliving that memory. That ngày was the first time and only she and Clark were ever truly alone together. She was at the prison anyway. She pulled herself together and walked in.
Immediately, every nurse within seeing range of Eve looked at her in shock. Jeanette stepped forward. “Susan…I was hoping you’d decided to take that time off.” She đã đưa ý kiến with a disappointed tone to her voice.
Eve awkwardly cleared her throat. “Um…no…I just slept in a little bit.” She approached the counter and grabbed a chart, the other nurses’ not taking their eyes off of her. Jeanette gently took the chart from her and gave her another one.
“Take this one instead. I’m sure you’d like to know how he’s doing. He’s still asleep; you’ll have to wake him up.”
Eve took the chart and read the name at the top: Skipper. She smiled slightly and said: “Thank you.” She brushed past her and headed to Skipper’s room.
She silently opened the door and peeked in. He was lying in the bed, sound asleep. She smiled and entered quietly, gently shut the door behind her, and approached him. She smiled and leaned forward, pressing her beak to his. Skipper opened his eyes slightly, not fully aware of what was going on. When he realized it was Eve, he kissed back. Eve pulled away a moment later. “Morning, sleepy-head.” She đã đưa ý kiến quietly.
“Hey, are bạn okay? I heard bạn were injured.”
“I’m fine. How are bạn feeling?”
“I’m fine. What happened to—” Skipper stopped in mid-sentence when he saw Eve’s side and pushed himself into a sitting position. “Wh-what did he do to you?”
“Nothing. It’s just a scratch. Now be quiet so I can get your tim, trái tim rate.” She put on her stethoscope, unbuttoned the hàng đầu, đầu trang of Skipper’s jumpsuit, and listened to his heart. “Strong and even.” She put the stethoscope back around her neck and looked at Skipper, who seemed deep in thought. “Are bạn feeling alright?”
“Huh? Oh…yeah, I’m fine.”
Eve crossed her flippers. “Skipper, don’t lie to me. What’s wrong?”
Skipper sighed. “It’s just…ever since I woke up…I feel…different. I just feel like I Mất tích something.”
“Hm. It’s probably just the fact that you’ve been unconscious for the past ngày and a half. It’s just the feeling that it seems you’ve missed so much.”
Skipper thought for a moment, then nodded slowly. “You’re probably right.” A doubtful look crossed over Eve’s face, then she picked up a tongue depressor and shined a light down Skipper’s throat. After doing so she checked his eyes for dilation. “Everything looks normal.” She leaned in and lowered her voice. “But that’s not what we’re telling the doctors.”
“What?”
“I just need to keep bạn here until this evening. A distraction will be made in the
west wing. When bạn here the alarms, use this to unlock your cuffs. Wait in here until I come get you.” She placed a key in his flipper.
Skipper looked at it in confusion. “How did bạn get this?”
Eve smiled. “Jeanette always keeps it in her left pocket. It unlocks all infirmary-owned handcuffs.” Eve đã đưa ý kiến recalling a few phút cách đây when she’d brushed bởi Jeanette.
“Pick-pocketing? Impressive.” Skipper đã đưa ý kiến with a devious smirk.
“I’ve had a lot of practice. Hide it in your pillowcase. If anybody asks, you’re feeling very nauseous. Make yourself puke if they don’t believe you.” Skipper nodded. “See bạn later, then.” Eve đã đưa ý kiến with a smile, then she turned to leave.
She’d almost reached the door when Skipper said: “Eve?”
Eve turned to face him. “Yes?”
Skipper nervously hesitated before saying: “I…I want to tell you…I need bạn to know…I tình yêu you, Eve.”
Eve was taken aback, not expecting Skipper to say that. She remained silent, then quickly walked forward, grabbed Skipper bởi the shoulders, and kissed him. It was the most passionate Kiss they’d ever shared. Eve hadn’t felt this way about anyone since Clark. When she finally pulled away, she whispered softly: “I tình yêu you, too.” She turned away quickly and left him, leaving the door open when she left.
Skipper watched her leave. “Wow…” He đã đưa ý kiến under his breath.
(Mess Hall)
Oh, how Hans loved the prison food. The only reason he ate it was because it was the only thing on the menu. He poked at it with his spoon and ate slowly. It was rare for him to finish his entire plate in one sitting. He looked up when Steven sat down across from him. “Hey, uh…Hans?”
“Yes…who wants to know?”
“Well, I wasn’t sure if that was your name hoặc not. I only ever hear bạn being called bởi your nickname.”
“Ugh…don’t remind me. ‘Pufferfish’ makes me feel so fat.”
Steven laughed slightly. “Heh, well, I just thought bạn should know; I was in the infirmary not too long ago, and I heard that your friend woke up last night.”
“What? bạn mean Skipper?” Hans asked in surprise.
“Yeah. ‘s all the nurses are talking about. Apparently, one of the nurses saved his life. She goes by, uh…Susan, I think.”
Hans thought for a moment, knowing that the name sounded familiar. Then he remembered that that was Eve’s alias. “Wow…uh…do they know who tried to poison him?”
“Yeah, Sergeant Manor. No one knows why yet. Susan killed him saving Skipper’s life.”
Hans’s jaw dropped. “Are bạn serious?”
“100%.”
Before Hans could say anything else, the buzzer sounded for the inmates to head out to the courtyard.
(Psych Ward)
When you’re in a whole different section of the prison, getting a secret message to someone is difficult. But if bạn have a wonder-tummy like Rico, it makes the task a whole lot easier. Rico was alone in his cell when his stomach vibrated; he had to refrain from giggling due to his being ticklish. When he ensured no one was watching, he regurgitated a cell phone. He opened up the text message Kowalski had sent him. It read: “B n the nfirmary @ 1800. Its goin down 2day.” Rico smiled. He was hoping it was going to go down soon. He was getting tired of the prison life. Being under all this security and confinement was making him start to go insane. And considering Rico isn’t exactly ‘sane’, that wouldn’t have ended very well.
(Infirmary; 6 hours until breakout)
“So what happened?”
“Does it hurt?”
“Everyone thinks you’re a hero!”
Eve waved her flippers, trying to silence the curious nurses. “Slow down! It’s really no big deal.” A small group of nurses had gathered in the break room during Eve’s break.
Daniel stepped forward. “How did bạn know?”
“I didn’t. I came back for my sweater, saw him going into Skipper’s room, and I wanted to know what he was doing. It sort of went downhill from there…”
“What did he say to you?”
“Nothing…except ‘Go to hell’.”
“Well! What a way to speak to a lady.” Briana đã đưa ý kiến taking a sip of coffee.
“Well, I want details! Please, Susan?!” Daniel pleaded.
Eve sighed. “Alright. I walked in, and I saw Manor walking into Skipper’s room. I followed, and when I peeked in, he was about to máy bơm a solution into Skipper’s saline. I acted on impulse. I charged phía trước, chuyển tiếp and tackled him to the ground—”
“You…tackled him?” Briana asked.
“Yes, why?”
“Nothing, it’s just that I’ve never met a woman with such guts. bạn go girl!” Eve smiled shyly.
“Sh! What happened next?” Daniel asked in anticipation.
“Well, after some struggling, he managed to pin me down. He grabbed a scalpel and cut my side. In my defense, I picked up the syringe that had fallen on the floor and stuck it into his shoulder. He pulled off of me, and when he did, he stumbled backward and fell on his shoulder, injecting the solution into himself.”
“Whoa…” One of the other nurses đã đưa ý kiến in astonishment.
“What about the part where he told bạn to go to hell?” Daniel asked.
“Oh, that happened when he’d me pinned down. I told him to get off of me and he told me to go to hell.”
“Oh. So Skipper woke up after that?”
“Yeah. Quite a coincidence, actually. I’m just glad he’s okay.”
A couple of giây later, Jeanette came striding into the breakroom. “There bạn all are. Get back to work! Susan is the only one who’s scheduled for break at the moment.” The nurses who were scheduled to work left the breakroom disappointedly. Jeanette approached Eve. “Are bạn sure bạn want to be here? If bạn feel poorly at all, please, feel free to go home.”
“I’m fine. Thanks anyway.”
Jeanette looked suspiciously into Eve’s eyes. “You met someone. bạn have that sparkle in your eye.”
“Sparkle?”
“Trust me; I’ve seen that sparkle before. Who is he?”
“I haven’t met anyone.” Eve insisted.
“Alright, don’t tell me. Good luck. If I’ve learned anything from my experience with men, it’s to be sure he’s worth it.” Jeanette đã đưa ý kiến as she left the breakroom.
Eve smiled to herself. “He is.” She whispered quietly.
(Courtyard; 4 hours and 17 phút until breakout)
Hans stood at the edge of the courtyard, flip-flopping over a decision. He wanted to go to the infirmary to see if he could find anything thêm out about Skipper and the incident that had taken place last night. On the other hand, he could just wait and ask Skipper once he was sent back to the cell block. Surely he’d be back bởi later on today. That’s when the buzzer sounded to head back to the cell block.
(Psych Ward; 3 hours and 44 phút until breakout)
Rico’s anticipation rose with each passing second. He paced back and forth in his cell. Once again, his stomach vibrated. He re-regurgitated the cell phone and read the text: “Wen u gt 2 the nfirmary, caus a distraction n the wst wng. Im sure u cn com up w/ somthng. Meet Skipper & Eve n the est wng.” Rico nodded to himself and swallowed the phone. He knew exactly what to do. He couldn’t wait.
(Infirmary; 2 hours and 37 phút until breakout)
“Still not feeling well, is he?”
“No, he’s still nauseous. He vomited quite a bit. I gave him some medicine and he should feel better bởi morning.”
“Alright; good job, Susan.”
“Thank you, Jeanette.”
“You’re welcome. You’re sure bạn don’t need a break?”
“No, I’m fine. Thanks for caring though.”
Jeanette half-smiled. “Take it easy.”
“I am. I have patients to tend to.” Eve smiled and left her. She’d informed Kowalski and Rico of her plan of action earlier and she was just itching to put it into effect.
(Cell Block; 1 giờ 28 phút until breakout)
“Hey, Snake, got another smoke?”
“Yeah, here.” Snake tossed Gator a cigarette, and he lit it and breathed in satisfaction.
Meanwhile, Hans nervously inhaled and exhaled. He’d decided that he was going to the infirmary. He’d also picked the perfect chim cánh cụt to get him injured enough to stay there for a while…Maybe he was crazy—actually, insane was probably a better-fitted word—but something deep inside him was telling him that if he didn’t go up to the infirmary, he was going to miss something important. He did something he’d been wanting to do since he’d met Snake, but had been too afraid to. He quickly approached him and snatched the cigarette from his beak. “These are horrible for your health, and getting on my last nerves quite frankly.” He dropped it to the ground and stomped it out. He was about to turn away when Snake grabbed him bởi the shoulder and swung him back around, causing him to flinch inside.
“Well, d’you know what’s horrible for your health? Messin’ with business that don’t concern you.” Snake reared his fist back and punched him in the jaw with excessive force. Hans was propelled backward. He was then kicked in the stomach and pushed into a set of cell bars, which caused his head to pound. After another hard jab to the side, a guard came to separate them.
“That’s enough, Crinks!”
“Dawg! I told bạn not to call me that! bạn want me to pound your face in?!”
“My apologies.” The guard đã đưa ý kiến smart-allecky. He turned to Hans. “Let’s get bạn to the infirmary.”
(Psych Ward; 46 phút until breakout)
Rico checked the time; it was 1714 hours. He figured that now was as good a time as any. Getting there early would help him with his timing anyway. He regurgitated a Swiss army dao, con dao and made small cuts on his flippers as he’d done before, swallowed the knife, then began freaking out to get the nurses’ attention. When she came, she called security. “Guards! It happened again!” The guards came as instructed and started to pull Rico out of his cell.
“How does he keep doing this?” One of them asked.
“I don’t know. I’m going to run another sweep on his cell for sharp objects. I probably still won’t find anything. I’ll try putting a monitor in his cell. Maybe we can figure this out.” With that, the guards took Rico to the infirmary.
(Infirmary; 19 phút until breakout)
Rico was in restraints and being tended to bởi Eve behind a curtain. After she’d bound his flippers, she leaned in and lowered her voice to a whisper. “Do bạn have the distraction ready?” Rico nodded and silently regurgitated an item into Eve’s flippers. Eve smiled. “Perfect.”
Meanwhile, Hans had just been tended to and was waiting to be released. He’d found out a little thêm about what happened last night, but still had chưa được trả lời questions. From his position, he could see Skipper in his room, completely bored. The feeling was mutual. That’s when Eve caught his eye. She brushed past Kowalski, who was cleaning a spill up. No one else noticed, but Hans did. Eve put a small item in Kowalski’s pocket; though he couldn’t make out what it was, he could infer what its use was going to be. It was going down now.
Skipper lay in his bed, fidgeting with the key in his flipper. He was nervous as a cat in water. He couldn’t help but wonder what was going to happen when it was time. He looked outside of his door and Hans immediately caught his eye. He’d forgotten all about him. He wondered if he knew about the plan, then he answered his own câu hỏi as he watched Hans position himself on the giường he was in to where he could easily snag the guards’ Taser if caught off guard.
Rico, too, took notice of Hans’s presence, and he wasn’t going to let him come…under any circumstances. It was his fault that any of this had happened, anyway. He and Eve exchanged a glance from across the room, thinking the same thing.
With 4 phút left, Kowalski set up the west wing for 1800. He went into a vacant room and set up the trap in the trash can, then quickly returned to the east wing. As soon as he returned, the smoke bomb in the west wing went off. There was no turning back now. The breakout had begun.
Day 10

“I told bạn two to wake me at 0630.”
