The new Anatomy of a Scene goes inside episodes five and six covering Sansa’s wedding and return to her once-home, now a castle of horrors, Winterfell.

She’s not going to accept it anymore, not without fighting for herself a bit. And this is the emergence of the new Sansa.

Some other details covered that may have been missed in the episode include the defacing of the direwolves sigil around Winterfell (in favor of the flayed man) and Theon wearing Robb’s old clothes in the wedding! These small details are what really flesh out the scenes and bring them to life. As Michael McElhatton said:

By the way, does anyone know which sets of characters and storylines will feature in episode 7?

The Wall, of course, with Jon and Tormund leaving as a setup for Hardhome. Will Aemon die this episode? King’s Landing will heat up, though how much? Obviously Olenna will scheme with the High Sparrow and Littlefinger, so she will be involved in Cersei’s downfall, but will this storyline end this episode with her imprisonment? What about Dany? Obviously Tyrion and Jorah arrive at Meereen, and in the promo we see Jorah practicing in that small pit, which matches other promos in which Dany is present at the scene. Will Tyrion meet Dany at last next episode? Will at least Jorah reunite with her? How far is her story going this episode? And Winterfell? Will Roose let out Ramsay (instead of the Freys and Manderlys) to fight Stannis in the snow, or we won’t get that far this episode? Will there be any Arya at all, does anybody know for sure?

reunited with Jorah until he saves her ass in the leaked photos from the pit. I kind of assume that she rejects him to the pits themselves when she hears he’s in Mereen, but meets with Tyrion while visiting a Cock Merchant.

I’m always amazed and grateful for the amount of attention to detail that takes place on this show. You might not like the Winterfell plot, but you surely can’t deny that they put a lot of attention into the small details, like set/costume design. I certainly can’t think of many shows that would include things like the dire wolf vandalism, Theon’s costume, & the Tully influence with Sansa’s dress. It really is first class.

I meant reunited in the literal sense of seeing each other again, not necessarily happily reunited. I agree she won’t accept him in her service until after the big event in episode nine.

That quote by director Mylod (who didn’t direct the last two episodes) is full of hope but can be deemed hypocritical given the final moments of ep6. I would like to have heard/read from director Podeswa.

As you point out, the fucking Boltons have defaced the Stark sigil around WF. I fear for the crypts and their multi-millenia of energy and souls. In the books, the crypts are patiently waiting for another Stark presence to bolster, suffering the fools who have invaded it. I hope the premature presence of Sansa back in WF will ignite the heart tree and crypts with the memory of who really rules WF!

3rd-party quotes are fine, but I like your analysis better.

The Theon weirwood moment may still come to pass. You know the show likes to mix up these moments, especially this season; no single chapter has been wholly adapted from beginning to end. It’s all mixed up. They may want to save that moment for next episode or whenever Reek becomes Theon again. Or they may not do it at all; but if they do, there’s no reason to worry just because it didn’t happen exactly when it did in the books, just after the wedding. That moment was all about Sansa, contrary to the books; having Theon have that revelation just between Sansa’s moment in the wedding and Sansa’s horrible moment in the bedding wouldn’t really have made much sense in the show.

Do you think it would’ve fit in that moment? If anything, it would have made that whole series of scenes more about Theon instead of Sansa, which has been a criticism already. Jeyne wasn’t a main character or a POV, and we saw everything through Reek in the books; but in the show Sansa is there, so the scene is (mostly) about Sansa. Having that amazing moment for Theon sandwiched between those Sansa moments would undercut itself and also the following Sansa scene, I think. Theon can have his quiet moment in the godswood after Sansa (presumably, according to the promo) approaches him to let him into the plot to undermine the Boltons and/or escape —which, remember, is what also happens in the books; he hears his names a few times in the godswood, and the second time is after he’s let into the spearwives’ very similar plot to help Jeyne. I don’t think this is just optimism; it really wouldn’t have made sense to include that scene in episode six. In fact, I’d go as far as to say that I’d rather the scene be cut than wasted in-between that series of scenes, which were all about Sansa.

The marriage took place in the godswood near the great Winterfell heart tree. That means someone was watching and listening….

someone who would have been GREATLY AFFECTED BY THIS FARCE!

Immediately after the ceremony, I would have hoped Theon/Reek would have lingered in confusion in the godswood….and then hears his real name in the wind. But before he can react, Roose calls him to join the bedding ceremony….but he does look back, possibly recognizing the voice. Then the atrocity happens to Sansa….

That would have injected a bizarre mystique into that horrible situation and it would have shown some damn respect to canon and Bran’s mystical missing storyline.

i think she will not be able to identify jorah because slavers or hizdar will make him wear that helmet …

and she will not know its jorah until the moment in daznak pit in the middle of jorah fighing accidently his helmet removed …and iam thinking that Dany will order them to stop fighting but will not be stopped ..

see this is a problem in the show we have seen her mention and think about Jorah in the books …the show has hardly even addressed dany mentioning Jorah after his exile …

we had the scene where jorah was mentioned by dany to ser barristan in the Day in the life promo but that scene seems to cut from the episode …

tyrion will be either claimed as gift by dany herself like she did with missandei because she will see tyrion in the small pit and oppose letting him fight …

Again, it would’ve made it all about Reek (and Bran.) Focusing on Sansa was the right decision, I think. Reek can get that moment later. I hope he does.

Dany has to meet Tyrion soon, going by the leaked images and the “Wheel” speech, which only makes sense if delivered to a Westerosi high-born she has just met —that is, Tyrion.

I wonder if we’ll get this exciting and long-awaited meeting (especially long-awaited for book readers, who got robbed of it in ADWD) and the Wheel speech this episode or if it won’t happen yet.

The gap between what the writers and directors seem to think they’re showing and what they’re actually showing is vast in this plotline.

well i do believe that the speech is given to Tyrion but i think it will be in episode 8 or 9 ..

yes its been long awaited but i have a bad feeling about this …i have a problem with how they are showing dany and tyrion in this season and last episode made me annoyed as well ..

iam waiting for this speech to see how it has done before start go ranting about it …if at the end of the season they had made sure that dany is not the mad queen and she is worth fighting for by tyrion i am fine with their changes in earlier episodes …but this trend continues and saint tyrion comes and clears all the problems of dany then iam sure will be ranting

Also what exactly doesn’t make sense in the Tyrion and Dany context, we know he is more experienced than her and of course when he arrives there and if Dany takes him into her group the things will get much better,it seems some book purist are so poor sighted and lazy with their bitching and moaning that they don’t even explain properly what they are bitching about .

As far as i know the season hasn’t ended yet and i think they talked about her general arc the whole season but hey let’s just put more fire on that discussion because it’s not like it hasn’t been talked ad nauseam on the past 10 articles or so,ugh !

but my complaint is more about not showing the human and gentle side of dany for the last two season while making everyone around her sympathetic ..

The follow-up to all of this is critical. Hopefully the next episode will provide some insight into the grand plan. A lot of characters and a lot of story lines are converging on WF. I am concerned that someone – or something – is going to get shorted.

Cogman said the same thing. The fact that TV-LF did not know what a monster Ramsay was is very important, as it implies that he still thinks she is his pawn, when in all likelyhood she now despises him. This miscalculation will be his undoing, in my opinion.

What could be its replacement in the books, as obviously Sansa being raped by Ramsay is not going to happen? I don’t think being raped by Harry would be the same, as Sansa’s intentions towards him are much more of her own free will and not something shoved upon her by Uncle Petyr. Is there something else out there that could flip Sansa against LF? I believe there is. Someone out there both knows about LF’s betrayal of Ned, has some level of affection for Sansa, and is not dead yet. I’ll let you figure out who on your own.

I hadn’t seen this article – thank you! It is pretty much everything I’ve tried to point out but in a much more well written way.

I’ve seen some people make this argument, but I really don’t see how that makes sense. LF made a mistake, but it was (bizarrely enough) an honest one, and the show evidently wants us to believe he was being genuine when he sold her on this plan and offered her a choice (even though that’s ridiculous when you look at the context). That Sansa’s break with LF would be completely unrelated to any of his actual crimes against her and her family is dubious, and I don’t see any reason why she would come out of this despising him, unless she believes he knowingly threw her to the wolves, which the writers say he didn’t.

Either way it confirms he’s sent to attack Stannis.

I thought it seemed obvious that Littlefinger was willing to throw Sansa to the wolves in the latest episode if it served his purpose. His revelation to Cersei HAS endangered Sansa’s life more, even if he still intends to fully betray Cersei when he moves north with his Vale forces. He set up the marriage alliance, after all, regardless of what he knew about Ramsay’s true nature. He’d always intended to play all parties against each other, which also involved making Sansa look even more traitorous for marrying into the Bolton family.

Sansa doesn’t know what he did in Kings Landing, but I do think she has a right to feel as though he played her, totally sold her a bill of goods with regard to how ready she was to take on the Boltons. He just left her there alone. It wasn’t necessarily his fault in those cases, but it does look bad from her perspective. If she only knew the rest…

Yep. It all sets things up for this line from the GoHH’s prophecy, “And later I dreamt that maid again, slaying a savage giant in a castle built of snow…” to come to fruition when LF arrives back in the North.

Ramsay vs. Stannis, Oh God, I hope so! Then he won’t be with Sansa. I hope Stannis kills him this season.

Producers may have meant to have Sansa to be on a journey as they invisioned it, but it came out compleatly diffrent on the screen. 99% people are watching the show not “making of” clips where the producer get to explain what they tried to achive.

Same goes for beheaded Direwolves … why bother going to all the trouble of making them if you are not going to show it on the TV screen.

If Arya’s in (which I expect due to “the Gift”) we’ll see ALL storylines this episode. In terms of main cast appearing, it’s a nearly ridiculously big ep:

Cersei, Tommen, Baelish (with Olenna), Margaery in KL; Jaime (with Myrcella) and Bronn (with SS) in Dorne; Brienne outside WF; Sansa, Theon, Ramsay, Roose inside WF; Stannis, Davos, Melisandre in the North; Sam, Gilly (recapped), Tormund and Jon at the Wall; Arya & Jaqen in Braavos; Tyrion, Jorah, Dany & Daario (recapped) in/near Meereen. That’s 24 out of 27, with the possibility of Missandei and Ellaria appearing as well.

I disagree. And I suspect I am not the only viewer who understood and saw the show-runner’s intentions played out on screen. I acknowledge that others saw something different, but some of the arguments I’ve seen have not been backed up with actual evidence – in my opinion.

Still, if people were majorly offended, I guess that’s their prerogative. To assume the worst of those who created the controversial scenes in question, though, seems a bit much.

That’s wrong! It is not necessary! The same plan Littlefinger laid out to Cersei was the plan he could have followed. Stand back (with Sansa) and let the Boltons and Stannis kill each other, and then roll in after the battle and take over. The writers just contradicted themselves bigtime and Sansa is the one paying the price.

How can Littlefinger not know who Ramsay was? It the goof of all times. And if he didn’t know who Ramsay was, why send Sansa to him? Littlefinger doesn’t go to the privy without a plan. He would do his research first. I know Littlefinger is just a man and can make mistakes like everyone else, but he would have done better than this. After this, Sansa will never trust him again! I’m surprised she still trusted him again after she sent her to the Boltons. It’s really sad too beacuse Sansa and Petyr could have been the power couple. Bad writing!

And I saw Iwan R. aka Ramsay covered in blood, but if he were fighting Stannis, shouldn’t he be in the snow? Who else was he fighting? Maybe Brienne and Podrick!

Am I the only noticing similarities between Michael McElhatton and Conleth Hill?

Well, they do like to get high and get ice-cream sandwiches together…(along with Aidan Gillen, of course).

I’m really hoping to see Eastwatch by the sea this episode, Since it’s there where Stannis left his fleet, It would be awesome to see Jon, Tormund and the rest of the nightswatch leaving to hardhome on the big ships, I imagine like a great cgi view of the limit of the wall with the eastwatch castle and the ships heading north… That would be an epic way of finishing this next episode imo.

I’m guessing that’d be episode 8, but… Stannis’ ships….. Salladhor Saan?!
