I think he's both.

He's good in the sense that he tries to be better than what he is. He uses what he can to become something better thn what a "vampire" is usually described as, a monster.

He's bad in the sense that he took grasp of Bella. He went against "destiny" and he went against all "logic". He has this ideal that he's "bad" no matter what he does, whether saving people and stopping those who hurt others. In New Moon, Carlisle explains that Edward doesn't believe there is redemption for those of their kind, no matter how much good they do. He's bad in that sense, but towards others, he's very respectable.
