I walked into the bathroom and sank to the floor tiếp theo to one of the sinks. I stared at the ceiling.
I was starting to doubt I was ever going to get a boyfriend, hoặc even kiss. I mean, Zoë had her first Kiss in fourth grade, and I’m fifteen!
Of course, that’s Zoë. But Ash kissed in fifth grade.
I moaned and leaned into the wall, squeezing my eyes closed. That boy—Travis—he was seriously cute. I didn’t know how to handle it.
“Quin,” someone whispered. I looked up. Ash was standing at the doorway.
“I’m not in the mood for jokes,” I said.
Ash came over and crouched tiếp theo to me. “Okay. What’s wrong?”
I shook my head. “Nothing.” I really just needed him to leave me alone.
He was quiet a moment. Then he spoke. “This sucks.”
I glanced at him. “What?”
“Well, you’re usually the one who helps one of us when we’re upset. Now you’re upset, so who’s going to help you?”
“I’ll get over it,” I said. That’s what I had done the other two times I had fallen in love, but somehow it didn’t seem the same. I mean, I was really attracted to him, and I didn’t even know him yet.
Ash nodded. “Right. Just…if bạn need anything, let one of us know. bạn know we’re here for you.”
“Okay,” I said. He seemed to sense that I wanted him to leave, because he stood up and started towards the door. Just as he was about to leave, he glanced back.
“You will tell us?” he said.
“Sure.”
Ash hesitated, then walked out the door.
I sat on the cold tile floor until my butt started to hurt and my legs cramped from curling up. I pulled myself up on one of the sinks and went back to the cafeteria.
“How long can someone pee?” Ryker đã đưa ý kiến as I sat down. “Lunch is almost over.”
“I had some homework I forgot to do,” I mumbled.
Ryker looked at me. “Quin, it’s the first ngày of school. Why the hell did bạn have homework?”
“Not homework. Uhhh…just a…you know…something…math.” I đã đưa ý kiến vaguely.
Ryker looked at me funny.
I poked at my green beans and realized I was starving. I started eating them, but they were freezing cold, as was everything else on my plate. I tried to fill myself with the milk, but it had grown warm and spoiled-tasting. I scooted my plate away and listened to what my Những người bạn were talking about while I waited for lunch to end.
“…new here? I don’t remember bạn from last year,” Lisa was saying.
“Yeah,” Tonia answered. “We moved up here a week ago. Pretty much the một phút we settled down, it was the first ngày of school! So, a lot of big changes all at once. New house, new school, no friends…”
“We’ll be your Những người bạn until bạn meet some other people,” Lisa said.
“Until I meet other people?” Tonia asked.
“And bạn stop wanting to hang out with us,” Lisa said.
“Nah, that won’t happen,” Tonia said. “Just ‘cause I’m Những người bạn with other people doesn’t mean I can’t be Những người bạn with bạn guys.”
The chuông, bell rang.
I went to my tiếp theo class: math.
I couldn’t pay attention. I just kept thinking about Travis. Why did I like him so much? It wasn’t like I could ever have him. I doubted he was gay.
I felt someone watching me and turned. It was Wesley Falcón. He smiled at me. I forced a smile back and turned towards the front of the room.
Funny thing about Wesley. He’s nothing special. He has straight brown hair, fair skin, and I think he went back a grade. It doesn’t seem like he would even vượt qua, cross someone’s mind.
But he’s so confident. Not proud. Just confident. It’s almost dwarfing in a way, just how sure of himself he is. It makes him seem sort of cute, in a way. Not like nothing special at all.
I could still feel him watching me. I could feel him watching me the whole time we were in class.
I walked out of class. Ash was crouching near the water fountain, holding something in his shirt.
“What’s that?” I asked.
“A squirrel.”
I didn’t ask how he’d managed to get a con sóc, sóc in his shirt. Ash is great with animals. It’s like he can talk to them.
“What are bạn gonna do with it?” I asked.
“It hurt its leg. I’m gonna take it home, take care of it, and then release it.”
“Yeah. You’ll release it,” I đã đưa ý kiến sarcastically. He says that after every animal he gets, and he never lets them go.
“I will this time!” Ash protested.
I rolled my eyes and turned to go. I saw someone walking in our direction.
“Travis,” I mumbled, realizing who it was.
Travis stopped. “Hi,” he said. Then, to Ash: “What’s that?”
“A squirrel.”
Travis raised his eyebrows, then turned to me. “You’re Quinton, right?”
My stomach fluttered. “Quin.”
Travis nodded. “Tonia told me about you,” he said.
A blush crept up my face. Had she somehow figured out that I’m gay? The câu hỏi crossed my mind, even though I was pretty sure it wasn’t that obvious.
“Uh…what did she tell you?”
“Your name, what sort of people bạn hang out with, stuff like that.”
I nodded. “Okay.”
“Did she tell bạn about me?” Ash asked.
“Same things. And that bạn have braces.”
Ash grinned. Travis stared. Most people do when they first see Ash smile. It looks like a wolf. With the braces, a chó sói, sói that got its teeth stuck in a metal trap.
“Well, I gotta go. Math class,” Travis said, walking down the hall.
I watched him until he disappeared through a door. The streaky hair really got me. It looked so silky, and his eyes were all sparkly…
“You like him?” Ash asked.
I jumped. “What?”
I blushed. “Uh, yeah, sort of.”
Ash grinned again. “His sister’s hot.”
“Want me to ask her out for you?”
Ash shook his head. “I’m okay. Thanks, though.” He stood up, still cradling the squirrel. “Do bạn think she could like me?”
I shrugged. “Maybe. I don’t really know that much about her, so it’s hard to tell.”
“That’s better than no,” Ash said. He went into his tiếp theo class, the con sóc, sóc trilling the whole time.
No, I thought. Probably all I’m ever gonna get.
Also, even if bạn don't like it, please bình luận why bạn don't like it so I can make it better.
