are always talking about how awesome their cast and crew is. They seem to genuinely enjoy their jobs and appreciate how lucky they are to be slaying zombies on TV’s highest-rated show.

awesome? We already asked Melissa McBride this question, and now we go to the woman behind katana-wielding Michonne to get her answer. So, Danai Gurira, what was your favorite day ever on set of

“I loved the day when Michonne took down all her walkers in that field,” says Gurira of episode 409, also known as “After.” “And it was a very unpredictable day. Mr. Nicotero just allowed me to kind of improv, killing 24 walkers. That was awesome and exhilarating and a really amazing experience to do — and also at the same time allowing Michonne to go through that sort of catharsis. So that was really, really thrilling for me.”

Gurira must really love that episode because she also picked another filming day from it, when she got to play a flashback vision of a pre-apocalypse Michonne. “I loved getting pretty in season 4 and having my dreadlocks be all wavy and be all cute for a day. That day was probably my weirdest day on the set. I was like ‘Where’s the dirt? Why are you guys putting eye shadow on me?’ That was weird, but fun weird.”

As grim as season 6 has been so far, Gurira says it has also been a delight to film. “I also so have enjoyed recent days where we’ve all been on set together, doing sometimes really small things, but just together that have really come together in a really powerful way. At the end of the day you feel like you really just gave a lot out. And it was fun. There have been a lot of fun days, even really recently.”
