Why doesn't ALW's original musical state that the Phantom's name was Erik?

Along with the mistery that goes with not knowing the phantom's name, I also think it creates thêm sympathy from the viewer. I mean, think about it--no one was even kind enough to give this poor man a name. It highlights furthur how horriby he was treated. Althought it would have been nice to know his name, especially if bạn have not read the novel and one of the many fictions following the original. I've always wondered that as well. It could be because they wanted the character to be thêm mysterious. Not knowing the name of a character can definitely achieve that.
