That's what I like to think too.
But then I have read comments and arguments on the net that him falling down is how they get round him being out during the day. Although its only just sun rise so still loads of shadows to hid in!
So I wanted to see what everyone else thought. (plus I just finished watching this season, hence most of my pick I've made to night are slightly S5 related and inspired lol)

I think it was both. If he had remained standing, the sun definitely would have scorched him, but I think that he mostly fell because he was overcome with emotion. But they definitely wrote it so he would be out of the sunlight.

i don't think it was anything to do with the sun rising .
i'm glad it didn't sizzle him though .

it was DEFINATELY emotion!! i mean he just realised that the person he loves is dead - why would he fall to his knees and cry because the sun was rising??! anyone who thinks he fell coz of the sun is "a bloody pillock"!

Why would there even be doubt? I mean it's obvious. 1 He fell so he could cry into his hands (Which made me practically fall to my knees witth a "awwwww, poor Spike-y) and 2 This is Spike we're talking about, I bet 50 bucks he didn't even notice the sun and the only thing he could see was dead Buffy.

Why would he cry if it was because the sun was coming up? He wouldn't be like *Oh the woman I loved just died, oh well. But I better start sobbing on my knees because the suns coming up, like it does every day".

I never considered the idea of it being anything but a display of emotion. Though when I saw this poll just now, I also did think "it could be weakness/physical pain after fighting".
