Why doesn't Sonic use the Super Emeralds anymore?

According to Takashi Lizuka, the Super Emeralds were added as a bonus feature in Sonic 3 & Knuckles so that people who had already collected the Chaos Emeralds in Sonic 3 would have thêm emeralds to collect when they locked on to Sonic & Knuckles.
