What is the factor that makes bạn afraid of something?

I just cant seem to understand this. We are afraid of some things, that others aren't. Why is this so? Why must we be afraid of this when others arent? Are we actually afraid of heights, hoặc just scared of falling? Are we afraid of the dark, hoặc what's in the dark? I dont get it!
