#FatalFinale is Fatal – ‘Taking This One to the Grave’

‘Taking This One to the Grave’ stole one of our favorite characters but left so much behind. Some of it horribly confusing, but a lot of it just really dull. I guess when you know you’re killing off an important character, the rest of the episode can be filler and still unforgettable?

But before we begin to say good-bye to summer and our Liars, let’s take a moment and mourn. Mona, you were a crazy bitch, but you were one of the most compelling people in Rosewood. You’ll be missed.

Have you ever wondered just how the Liars made the cut to be Team Alison? The Liars have, so Mona spells it out for them. Alison was too much of a big bad to consider any one teenage girl a threat, instead she took four and made them into the ultimate frenemy who was smart (Spencer), loyal (Emily), admiring (Hanna) and felt everything (Aria).

It’s an interesting theory, but I think it’s more how Mona sees the Liars than how Ali saw them. Hanna’s smart like Spencer (if you believe the dumb girl scores super high on her SATS trope that was trotted out), Spencer is emotional like Aria (to the point of being committed to Radley) and Aria is loyal like Emily (well, as long as it doesn’t involve Ezra).

With Team Alison deflecting to Team Mona, it seems a sure bet that ‘A’ will be no longer. But when is anything a sure bet in Rosewood?

The Liars and Mona quickly discover that Ali has been framing Spencer to take the fall for Bethany’s death all along. The Rosewood PD is full of idiots, so they quickly buy what Alison’s selling via the worst polygraph test in history.

Mona and Spencer go undercover at Radley to find out why Ali’s setting up Spencer and discover it’s because Bethenny’s dad was sleeping with Ali’s mom and Alison was jealous. So jealous she decided lured Bethenny to Rosewood, set her up to be killed in the infamous yellow shirt and then frame Spencer for it. I know that we’re using Ali is a sociopath logic here, but this seems like a bit much to cover in one night, even for ‘A’!

All of the Liars’ bed buddies, as Mona refers to them, show up this episode to provide a little help. Ezra bakes two Thanksgiving pumpkin pies to take to Aria’s. Paige’s spying leads to the reveal that Ali’s replaced the Liars with a new team, the people she used to torture. Caleb hacks stuff. Toby gets into a car accident and breaks his leg. I’m pretty sure ‘A’ had nothing to do with Toby’s accident, but damn if she can’t even make karma pick her favorite method for payback. The girl does have a thing for cars.

None of this had much to do with moving the plot forward, but I guess it’s to be sure that all the Liars have someone special when they come back for Christmas.

Spencer doesn’t have much to be thankful for when she’s arrested for Bethenny’s murder at the Brew on Thanksgiving. The rest of the Liars, and Toby, are indignant and it takes a few minute of them screaming before someone realizes they should call her parents, the lawyers.

After Mona gets the text from Hanna that the cops have arrested Spencer, she decides to send her worried mother off to Thanksgiving without her, promising she’ll be on the road soon, so that she can go over the files from Radley one more time. Certain she’s found the proof that Alison’s the reason Bethenny’s dead, Mona calls Aria and tells her she can prove Ali is ‘A’.

Aria, Ezra, Hanna and Emily head to Mona’s but it’s too late. Blood covers the walls and though there’s no body, Detective Holbrook tells us Mona has to be dead. If it was only the word of the Rosewood PD, we could hold onto hope that Mona was still alive, but the blonde assailant has one more holiday surprise for us. She replaces the baby Jesus in the Fields’ Christmas manager with a Mona doll and tucks baby Jesus in next to dead Mona in her trunk.

Oh Mona, you deserved a better death. You deserved to make it out of Rosewood and into one of the Ivy schools that accepted your crazy ass early admission despite the fact you tried to
