It's pretty obvious she tries to invoke the whole tragic starlet thing. She even references her at least once in Body Electric. Lana herself is different though. Both were/are intelligent but Lana stays out of drama, which Marilyn didn't, and Lana sobered up while sadly MM never did.

Also, Marilyn was overrated and not actually a very good actor as people say.
