We try to get plot details out of Maisie Williams, Alfie Allen and more.

In Westeros the title “Master of Whisperers” belongs to eunuch spymaster Varys, due to his unparalleled network of “little birds” and ability to unearth vital covert information throughout the Seven Kingdoms. No doubt many Game of Thrones fans wish he had a real-life equivalent to ferret out the show’s secrets ahead of its Season 6 premiere.

With TV storylines now outstripping the source novels, for the first time no one knows what lies ahead. Wary of the dreaded piracy/social media combination, HBO are even refusing to send out press preview copies for the first few episodes. So, when interviewing the show’s cast ahead of transmission, it’s equal parts fascination and frustration, watching them play the game of spoilers…

Now the TV series has overtaken the books, do you think you have any influence on [showrunners] Dan Weiss and David Benioff for your character’s fate?

Michael McElhatton (Roose Bolton): None whatsoever! No, I think it’s all very well planned out in advance.

Iwan Rheon (Ramsay Bolton): The thing with those two is, whatever you said, they’d probably do the opposite just to piss you off..!

Talk about your expectations vs. the reality of the new scripts.

Alfie Allen (Theon Greyjoy): For me it was just thoroughly disappointing… [laughs]  No, I guess I don’t want to say anything, or give away any sort of tidbit about what is going to be there, because for me it could be equally as dark and horrible but still as fun to do and play. But I’m just glad to be there…. [laughs] Sorry…

Maisie Williams (Arya Stark): This series for Arya, being blind is a massive challenge. For the last season, when I got to wear the contacts for that one scene it was really exciting and I was really looking forward to this year. Little did I know, after about a week of doing stunts with them in, my eyes started to stream… [laughs] It was definitely a challenge but that’s what I love about playing Arya and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Liam Cunningham (Davos Seaworth): The first episode, the kick-off with her [points to Carice Van Houten], is astonishing.

Carice Van Houten (Melisandre): Yes…! But it’s not what you think it is, it’s something else. I knew it was coming at some point, people had talked about it before to me, but I wasn’t sure when it was going to happen… oh, this is really vague… but it should be. And it’s in Episode 1 already.

Liam Cunningham: Yeah, I’m sure you’d love that. We would be hunted down and chopped to bits!

Carice Van Houten: [Melisandre’s] whole world is shaken, she’s been on this mission and all of a sudden it makes no sense. The sacrifice of this girl didn’t work and she never allowed herself to go into the emotion of that. And that’s where we find her in Season 6, she’s just gone.

Liam Cunningham: There’s absolutely amazing stuff coming in, and so left-of-field. Watching your favourite characters being put in these situations, they’re so unpredictable and unexpected and it’s one of the trademarks of the show. I mean, for me, [points to Maisie Williams] your voyage this year is insane! [Maisie Williams laughs]. It is so different from what Game of Thrones has been, it’s just nuts.

Maisie Williams: The main exciting thing about this series, because we’re now ‘off-book’, is they can write a well-rounded series without having to stick to certain plot points already laid out. So everyone can have like a nice arc and a pinnacle moment. Although a lot of my scenes this year are split up, and I’m in less episodes than I’ve been in previous series, I feel like the story totally flows still.

Dean-Charles Chapman (Tommen Baratheon): There’s a lot in Season 6 that I can’t tell you about… Uh…. I’ll say Tommen has a new objective, that’s all I could say… it’s a very good season.

You understand, though, that people really want to know what’s coming…

John Bradley (Samwell Tarly): People don’t really want to know. They don’t. They say, in a vaguely jovial way, ‘Have you got any spoilers?’ and you just think, well listen to yourself. Listen to the word you’ve used. You want me to “spoil” it! If you told them and said, “OK, I’ll save you time,” not just relating to this, but to any cliffhanger, they’ll say [disappointed voice] “Oh… You’ve ruined it now...”

Ian Beattie (Meryn Trant): I only ever read my scenes and I remember the last day of Season 4, I’d spent the entire season saying, “I don’t want to know what happens next!”, and me, Jamie and Joffrey were filming in the King’s Guard room. I finish the scene, sitting outside having a cigarette and Charles Dance [Tywin Lannister] walks past and says, “The little bastard [Tyrion] finally killed me!” Biggest spoiler ever…

Game of Thrones: The Complete Fifth Season is available on Blu-ray and DVD while Season 6 premieres on April 24th 2016.
