I can't get on board with the whole "fight fire with fire" thing. Abuse does need to be reported though, and furthermore it needs to be taken seriously. If someone is willing to do something as extreme as murder their abuser and as such risk going to jail for life, that's good evidence that they weren't receiving the protection they needed. How about taking crime more seriously in order to eliminate the quantity of crime in the world?

One of the points in the above link reads: "The average prison sentence of men who kill their women partners is 2 to 6 years. Women who kill their male partners are sentenced on average to 15 years, despite the fact that most women who kill do so in self defense (National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 1989)."

Unfortunately the stats here are really tricky, as laws around the world have changed multiple times to try an figure out how to deal with this issue. But in America for sure, women who are convicted of murdering their partners serve longer than men who are convicted of murdering their partners. And there are serious race and class factors there too.

The most important issue I think is the systems and institutional issues that women have available to them in order to get help to deal with abusive partners. The efficacy of the processes for protecting people (female or male) from partner violence really needs to be seen as the site of change, as well as education and specialised help to prevent partner violence in the first place.
