I think somehow Edward becoming a vampire messed everything up because Bella would have been with Jacob but then since Edward came along, Jacob had to imprint on SOMEONE, so Bella and Edward had to have Renessme.
That's just my opinion though.

I think he became vampire so he can be with Bella. becuase somehow fate messed up and they were born 80 years apart. and then fate messed up again with Jacob. although I blame that particular mess solely on him
