When I first saw Mulan, I was 16. I sincerely, innocently, really genuinely believed Shang was gay. I didn't think they were going to make him come out or anything, I thought they were just hinting at it.
When he returned Mulan's helmet to her at the end & them together was hinted at, I was genuinely surprised. I remember my eyebrows shooting up in surprise.

Misogynist =/= gay! Suggesting it does equal is homophobia and normalization of rape and domestic abuse. Chi-Fu's or anyone else's lack respect of women doesn't mean lack of sexual attraction of them. It's not uncommon for straight men to be rapists or abusive husbands. It's uncommon for gays to be good friends with women.

Shang is definetely not gay in canon because he is attracted to a woman. He may be bisexual, it's doesn't condracts canon but I don't think it was intended. I don't think Disney in 90s was LGBT-friendly enough to make the male lead bisexual. Shang being gay contradicts canon. Shang being straight is what I believe was intended but it's not only possible interpretation. Shang being bisexual doesn't contradict canon.
