I think it's more this one, because she fought for her father and also at the end how she stood up to Shang and the rest of the soldiers, even when they didn't want to have anything to do with her.

"Girls can kick butt too" is totally right, but not exactly the moral

She knew what was expected from her to recieve honor, but none of it reflected who she was in her heart (corniest thing I've ever typed). Her love for her father and desire to do the right thing are what drove her to defeating the Huns, showing all of China that she kicks @$$.

I always saw this as the moral right from when I was a little girl. Because I was a weird child, I'd then say something along the lines of "And this is why Taki is the best character in Soulblade. BECAUSE GIRLS CAN KICK BUTT TOO, just like Mulan and that girl from The Evil Dead 2! Erm, even though she gets stabbed in the back and dies. But still, girls kick butt!"
Yes, I was such a fucked-up child that I had a Soulblade, Disney and Evil Dead obsession when I was 5. I also had a Batman obsession. Batman obsession has never ever died. Not even for a second. My flying rodent still there in my heart. Actually, neither has my Disney obsession. Or my Evil Dead obsession. Or my Soulblade obsession. Although, that has progressed so far that it is now a Soulcalibur 4 obsession.

SO ANYWAY, Mulan is kickass. She could beat up any zombies, bad guys in latex and medieval sword-wielding fools anytime. Hence the moral of the story. Though, when I was little, I think I may have percieved it slightly more as "Girls rule, boys drool!"
