If they hadn't changed it, Ariel would've died. I mean I like the original, but still. Number two for me would be The Princess and the Frog. Loved that movie, way better than the fairy tale.

I thought the original stories for most of these were just fine without Disney changing them. But this is the only exception, it never appealed to me in the least. The movie however gave it a little more excitment and fun twists, so I chose PATF.

It is more now then just two people's story. More characters are explored. The Little Mermaid was perfect the way it was, but was dumbed down.

By far this one in my opinion. In the original the prince is a creepy rapist. He sleeps with her while she is still unconcious. In fact, in the old version I read (not sure if it was the absolute original, but it was one of the older versions) he actually knocks her up while she's asleep, and it's the baby that wakes her. That is beyond creepy, and I see no way at all they could make that a kids movie.

With the little mermaid, I think as a book the original is much better but to make it into a kids film I'm glad they made the changes they did. The changes didn't make the movie version better, both versions work best for what they are intended to be.
The princess and the frog was a good change, I never cared about that story at all before.

I barely told my mom how that actual story The Little Mermaid went and she was extremely sad that the mermaid killed herself over a man. I showed her the Disney ending of the movie, trying to make her feel better.

And I also agree that I like what they did with The Princess and the Frog. I was disappointed when I heard that Disney was going to do a movie based on The Frog Prince. I'm all "But nothing really happens in that thing." So I like that they put more of a story to it.

the little mermaid? i hate disney's little mermaid version. the original fairy tale is soooooooo much better.

I'm so glad they changed the Little Mermaid! Back before the Disney version was released on video, I kept bugging my Mom about wanting the movie...since the Disney one wasn't out yet, she bought an old Anime version of the movie...in that one, the mermaid killed herself. I cried for a week, LOL. I was upset until Mom bought the Disney one for me, and I was fine after that!

I'm not sure. I found it hard. I mean, she died in the original fairytale. And in the Cinderella fairytale, the stepsisters cut parts of their feet off so their feet fit in the slipper!! eugh!!

The ending was a little too mature for young audiences.

ALetterToElise, the pick did ask which 'original' fairy tale, so I assumed it meant the very original telling of each story, not a specific one that Disney may have referenced. I looked it up to check my facts, and the sites I found did say the original of the story was the creepy rape version.

Ok, then i agree with mermaid-tail, it was very creepy. i kinda want to look up the story but i'm afraid it's gonna mess up my views on the whole sleeping beauty story (and it happens to be my all time favorite)...

remember every time someone in the movie said "Jasmine". now replace it with "Badroulbadour". that was originally Jasmine's name!
