I can understand people disliking characters for being passive or "damsels in distress", but I never get why people dislike femininity so much. Not only princesses, but look at the way girls are raised: if they're brought up to like girly stuff like fashion and makeup, they'll be accused of being shallow and stupid.
And in other media, often times the tomboy character will always be written more likeable than the girly girl. Sooo many kid shows turn the girly girl into a stupid shallow bitch it's almost insulting (Hey Arnold, As Told by Ginger, The Wild Thornberries, Dexter's Laboratory, Arthur...). Even adult media isn't extempt from this (Glee, pretty little liars, Mean Girls, Game of Thrones, Avengers Age of Ultron).
It's really surprising when you come across a piece of modern media that doesn't vilify the girly character nor make her and the tomboy enemies (Princess and the Frog, Big Hero 6, Lord of the Rings).
This drives me nuts! Even Belle gets attacked for being feminine. I hate the mentality that feminine makes you weak. You can still be feminine & strong at the same time.
I agree completely with scarletunicorn. I'm really grateful that my mother raised me to not be ashamed of my femininity, but I know that it's not the same case for everyone. :(
and the only time girliness/femininity is "acceptable" is if she has other things, cooler and more impressive traits or hobbies, about her to 'make up' for it. Daenerys has dragons, Rapunzel uses cookware for weapons, Honey Lemon is a scientist, Elsa has ice powers, etc. "Normal" feminine girls like Aurora and Sansa are called useless and weak because they don't have "cool" powers/skills or magical creatures as pets.
If you don't take to those characters because you personally don't enjoy it when characters are overly feminine, que sera sera. But it isn't a flaw, and therefore not something the character deserves hate for.
